That was AWESOME.

Wuxia is back, baby. Warring clans, filial piety, honor, betrayal, protecting the weak, and of course, vengeance. Bloody, bloody vengeance. So many cold weapons - swords, spears, melon hammers, retractable wolverine claws, hard whips, bows, arrows, axes, axes chainlinked to flying claws - YWP directing cold weapon fights? Yes please. Some very panoramic scenes of exotic desert landscapes. Shot in IMAX and I would've loved to have seen it so. Jet delivers a nice opening fight, but make no mistake, this is a Wu Jing film.

I cannot think of a better way for me to celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse.

This is opening on Friday across the Bay Area. I'm planning on going to the 7:05 showing at Mercado next Tuesday. Anyone care to join me? tg - I still owe you dinner from last year.

This was fun. It's based on a Hong Kong TV show from a quarter century ago. A time-traveler ends up as the Sifu of the First Emperor of Qin. The movie reunites the original cast. I'm told it was a lot of fan service and having never seen the show, I could sense how some of the scenes must have been so hard hitting if you were a fan. Part period film, part sci-fi, some drama and a lot of comedy, but not too much Kung Fu. There's a flying skateboard fight. The set pieces are amazing. And there's some rather large crowd scenes that don't look like CGI (but it's getting so hard to tell now). Overall entertaining, and it had an alternate ending after the main credits where the leads gathered for a meal and wished everyone Happy New Year (it's a traditional cliche deployed by many Lunar New Year films).

The best part was going with my siblings from Lam Kwoon. Keith and I have been Kung Fu fanboys and friends for ... yikes like half a century. Stephan and Wendy are dear friends too - they hadn't been to a movie theater in years and were both blown away by the reclining reserved seats and that a Chinese movie would almost fill the house on a Tuesday night. None of us had seen the show, but we all enjoyed it.

It's not a must-see film but it is very entertaining. Not D00M recommended. There are other CNY films to be seen.

This is getting solid buzz. Might have to check it out. Opens this week.

It looks fun. When will it hit Netflix, I wonder?

It’s in US theaters right now.
There are 3 Jackie movies that have yet to be released on a North American streaming platform: Panda Plan, A Legend & Hidden Strike. Panda Plan got released to DVD & BRD - KFM did a sweeps promo for it. Hidden Strike was ‘23. The other 2 were ‘24.

Holy Cats! That was fun. This is Jackie Chan at 71 reclaiming his crown as the King of Action. So fun. So Jackie.

It has that old Hong Kong skool 80s police procedural spirit. Some preposterous leaps in surveillance and observation and absurd criminal identity concealment, but once that's accept this movie moves along at a steady clip. Then it goes full Hong Kong ballistic and literally explodes. Absurd action overkill. In a flash, a firefight turns into a major siege with car battering rams and lots of exploding. These are Kung Fu superheroes. No one is Jackie Chan. No one comes close.

Jackie plays a retired cop now dog walker named Wong who gets called back to deal with the Shadow, a supervillian played by veteran HK star Tony Leung Ka-Fai. There's a lot of old skool vs modern kids and analog vs tech stuff.

The fights are one shot / 1-3 moves but it's that kinetic Jackie choreo where you can disassemble a pistol while fight the person trying to shoot you with it. Jackie takes some falls. Jackie does a big car crash stunt - he pulls out to safety much quicker than he did when he was 40, but if he hadn't moved, he would've been crushed by a flying car for real.

Jackie also delivers a solid emotional performance. He's still working out issues with his real life daughter, and there's a lot of parent child themes. Playing opposite Zhang Zifeng playing Guoguo, his dead former partner's daughter.

It's melodramatic and nationalistic. At one point, I was getting misty over the noble sacrifice of Macao cops anfter a rousing speech by Jackie. Wait, what? I don't even know why that worked so well on me. It was overplayed like Hong Kong cinema does. But for me, it worked.

There's a subtle dig at Karate Kid: Legends. The Shadow's Edge starsthe Jackie/Jaden Karate Kid actors Yu Rongguang (Master Li / Kreese) ad Wang Zhenwei (Cheng / Johnny Lawrence).

It also stars Xing Yu looked remarkably young, so much so that I thought it was just a young and up and coming action star that looked like Xing Yu. He's 47 now I think and plays a background hench in his 20s. That's the Shaolin monk I trained with in 95 & 96 whohas gone on to become a major action star.

Ultimately, it's all about the action. This is Jackie at his purest. He's using a stuntman (has been for years now) but delivers a lot of the fights personally. His gait is a bit off, there's a limp and a waddle, and I'm not sure that him acting. Nevertheless, he still moves better than I have ever moved in my life. Some of those flips, falls and fight scenes are clearly him and he's still so agile and clever about how to stage the hits for maximum impact. It's sanguineous - sanguineous in that 'I'm going to stick my thumb in your wound for break your chokehold' way.

Absolutely D00M recommended.

Note: the theater was almost full. I was the only person in the front row (center) but all the other rows were filled except some of the side seats. All Chinese. And eveyone I saw as I cut through Whole Foods was Chinese, excpet two angry looking dudes and two dreads. What is happening??

The latest from Xu Haofeng.

I got a screener for this because I was planning a review on KFM but that didn’t work out. Not sure how I’ll uphold that obligation but I’ll figure something.

Xu Haofeng does classy Kung Fu films. He’s fascinated with the ROC period and all his films are gorgeous in sets, costumes and atmosphere. The last one reviewed here was The Final Master http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=4253

Like the rest of his work, this film engages the code of ethics of the Wuhuan (the martial circle) and it’s all about dueling. Layers of complexity bind the characters to their fates, and ultimately it’s another tragedy, a bitter nostalgia of the loss of the way in the light of guns, foreigners and the modern world.

The fight choreo is excellent - some of the best I’ve seen recently - sharp, tight, crisp, strong and if you’re quick enough to follow the action, simply brilliant work in the dialog of steel, wood, flesh and bones. I’m going to have to watch this again just for those fight scenes. Just beautiful to behold. I’ll also have to watch it again to get the plot straight because I got lost in some of the story arcs. Xu doesnt make his storytelling so obvious - seemingly minor points are revealed and then culminate into something significant.

Totally D00Mworthy, especially if you haven’t tuned into Xu’s work yet. This is the best one since The Grandmaster, and arguably has the best fight scenes. Great stuff.

Best martial arts flick I've seen in years. How often do I say that?*

I confess that I'm biased. It stars Philip Ng, a personal friend, who I've watched rise up from a US martial champion to a Hong Kong martial arts star. He's working with Sammo Hung a lot now (who has a part in this). Phil is an overthetop psycho villain with impenetrable Iron Shirt skills.

This is directed by Soi Cheang who won me over with his brilliant Monkey King adaptation. This is an homage to that unique Hong Kong genre of triad films. It's based on a manhua (that's canto for manga) by Andy Seto that was novelized. It premiered at Cannes this year, and is the second highest grossing flick in Hong Kong of all time right now.

Laden with draconian codes of 'ethics' and a wuxia underpinning, these are brutally ultraviolent, gritty and merciless. Think of the John Woo/Chow Yun Fat classics. Set in the notorious walled Kowloon city in the 80s, it's a dark and claustrophobic tale of an immigrant who falls into the triads. With echoes of Scarface, it's layered with backstory melodrama and vengeance, peppered with tasty ultravi with next level action choreography. The cinematography is crazy, heightening the action with a sanguineous panache and insane wirework. Like a classic wuxia, the Kung Fu masters have superhero superpowers, punching each other through cement walls and flying across rooms, but it's done with great effect, frenetic and furious but followable sequences that are fresh and clever. Luved it.

Totally D00M recommended.

I reached out to Phil just now to compliment him on it and ask for an interview.

*once every few years, I reckon.

SEE THE HARD-HITTING KUNG FU DOC WITH A REAL-LIFE BRUCE CLONE

After becoming an international martial arts sensation, the death of Bruce Lee left a dragon-sized hole in cinema that was impossible to fill – not that people didn’t try. Whether you prefer Bruce Li, Dragon Lee, or Bruce Liang, there’s a clone for you. ENTER THE CLONES OF BRUCE is a love letter to the original icon, the badass actors tasked with filling his shoes, and the cinematic awesomeness that is kung fu movies. Our friends at Fantastic Fest will be taking it on tour with one of the most prolific Bruce clones, Bruce Le, joining us along the way for live Q&As.

THE DEATH OF BRUCE LEE GAVE BIRTH TO A NEW FILM SUBGENRE: BRUCEPLOITATION

WHAAAAAA! WATAAAHHH! AAAAAYYYYYY!
You’d be hard-pressed to find another actor who could be identified based on just a few yelps, but somehow, immediately, you know the man I’m referring to here.
Although Bruce Lee’s best-known films – THE BIG BOSS, FIST OF FURY, and THE WAY OF THE DRAGON – weren’t produced for audiences outside of Hong Kong, his cool blend of rakish charm and unparalleled martial arts skill caught the attention of the global market and quickly established him as an international star. When he died in 1973, it left an indelible mark on a genre that was just beginning to establish itself, and film studios around the world jumped into the fray to capitalize on Lee’s incomparable presence, giving birth to a kung fu subgenre: Bruceploitation.
From spitting-image clones like Dragon Lee in South Korea and Bruce Le in Myanmar to spiritual successors like Blaxploitation icon Jim Kelly and the pioneering "Lady Kung Fu" Angela Mao, the ripple effect of the Dragon’s death lasted over a decade, spawning countless careers and hundreds of movies.
ENTER THE CLONES OF BRUCE tracks down producers, scholars, aficionados, and some of the movement’s biggest stars, all skilled martial artists in their own right, as they reminisce over a bygone era of gonzo plotlines, shoestring budgets, and questionable taste. (Lori Donnelly)

If ever there was a case for MercNRet, it has been this event. The publicity rep reached out to me on 4/4 asking me if I wanted to interview Bruce Le (of course I did) but then wasn't sure if she could get me into the screener. WTH? I have never heard of a screener where there wasn't a press section. That's the whole point of screeners. Anyway, we batted it back and forth over a dozen plus emails - we were working with the wrong date for a while, and also were looking into a viral interview and online screener, but I really wanted to see something at Alamo Drafthouse. I was only there once for the missed effort to see the screener for EEAAO and the house looks awesome.

Things finally settled to me interviewing Le at his hotel (he's staying at the BEI SF downtown but you didn't hear that from me), then to just prior to the screener, and now, it'll be after the Q&A.

There was also an issue getting the press pass. I asked for a +1 (which is industry standard except for rare cases) but offered to just take one pass. Nevertheless, my +1 was approved. Now my friend and regular accomplice Carlos might have to bail because our mutual friend (and his housemate) just had a death in the family this morning, her twin sister's fiancé. I was texting her last night as she was coping with it. She has a very complicated relationship with her sister. They are both Russian adoptees.

Anyway, it's been crazy. MercNRet crazy. I'm going to head up early, hoping to avoid any more cosmic chaos.
