Sinners (2025)

We took a break from the vacation to see the movie taking America by storm. And it was fine. The fact Michael P. Jordan plays twins takes me out of the movie a lot because I kept asking myself how big they do that.

There's not a lot to the story on a basic level. Towards the end, I felt there were a few story cheats. But on the whole it was a diverting two hours.

The Queen really enjoyed it.

Children of the Corn

The original (1984) was the first movie I ever walked out of.

I watched another movie first, but hung around the complex and went into another theater for this (1984 version). It opened with a family in a car traveling. Through cornfields. Then it zooms in on various little trinkets in the car, all corn-related. Then they're in a restaurant eating, and there's close-ups of the salt and pepper shakers, and they're like corncobs. And I'm being inundated by this crap, and then the kids show up, and they're all looking down at their shoes, because their shoes are untied, only their shoes are tied and they aren't really looking down, they're looking straight ahead, only their heads are tilted down, and they'll have neck problems later in life if they keep doing that, but it makes them look evil so they keep doing it.

I couldn't take it anymore. I walked out, stopped at the grocery store on the way home and bought corn on the cob, and at home I burned it on my altar to myself.

Then I ate it.

There is a Bollywood Version of Scream. Who knew?

Titled Sssshhh…, the Bollywood version of Scream was released in 2003, seven years after Wes Craven’s horror masterpiece changed the game and pulled apart slasher conventions. As Paul Lê explained right here on Bloody Disgusting last year, “The bones of the original story are here, but everything else feels absolutely unfamiliar to Ghostface fans.”
Sssshhh… was directed by Pavan S. Kaul and written by Arshad Ali Syed, and we’re excited to announce that the film is coming to SCREAMBOX in time for Scream VI‘s arrival in theaters.
The Bollywood film becomes a SCREAMBOX SVOD Exclusive on February 3, 2023!
The storyline? Paul explains, “Sssshhh… begins with the murder of two college students, Malini (Simone Singh) and her boyfriend. Malini is slaughtered on campus by a knife-wielding stranger wearing a black cloak and a clown mask. The killer, dubbed the Joker, goes dormant until six months later when he returns to stalk Malini’s sister, Mehak (Tanishaa Mukerji).
“She and all her friends are now on the Joker’s to-kill list.”
Paul’s article continues, “By now everyone is asking whether or not Sssshhh… is a faithful remake of Scream. Without giving the ending away, this film loves to color outside the lines while also retaining quintessential concepts. There is still a high amount of unpredictability going on here, though. A film like this is at its most effective when the viewers are forced to ponder what else could happen in such an offbeat and uniquely Indian reimagining of an American cult classic. While it is definitely not a patch on the original, and a number of things get lost in translation, Sssshhh… is a loud remake rich in regional charm and bold choices.”

Last Night in Soho (2021)

Edgar Wright writes and directs this tale that bounces between the swinging sixties and modern day London. Eliose is a fashion designer student. She gets a flat in Soho where she she see the previous tenant Sandy living her life in the swinging sixties. Sandy gets caught up with a great Matt Smith who plays Jack. Sandy is played by Anya Taylor-Joy from The Queen's Gambit. Things get nightmarish for Eloise as Sandy starts to take over her life, sort of. I guess that's where the horror comes up. But it is more psychological than horrifying.

I might have seen too much of the trailers because I wasn't too excited by the unique effects Wright uses to show Eloise with Sandy. It took me a long time to figure out which roll Dame Diana Rigg played. I think this might be her last roll.

It was nice to see an original movie that didn't have super heroes in it. But I don't think the film is all that good.

Okay, Seanan McGuire can't stop writing. This year she was up for five Hugo awards.

Discount Armageddon and it's sequel Midnight Blue light special tells the tale of Verity Price and her dealings with monsters as she struggles to be a ballroom dancer in New York City. The books are fun if a bit frilly. The first book is about the quest to find a dragon under New York. The second is about the arrival of the Covenant in New York. The Covenant are the arch enemies of Verity and the Price family.

I enjoyed the books because the Yeti appears in it under the guise of Ista, a waheela. Ista's main aim it to participate in whatever carnage and mayhem is about to occur. I'm also fond of the talking Aeslin Mice who revere Verity as a living god and spend their days in religious observance of her existence.

Real 3D is cool. The story takes place in S.F., so that's funny. Reese and Seth are funny. That's about it. You've seen the trailer, you've seen the movie. I was hoping it would be more of an homage to those old '50's monster movies and for a moment, it looked like it was going to go there. They even went for the ol' 3D paddle ball schtick - classic! This film had so much more potential in that direction. But no, it went with the standard kid-flick formula.

T liked it, mostly for Reese and Seth and the 3D.

What kind of world do we live in when my Father sees a sneak preview of a Zombie movie (starring Billy Connelly) before I do. I thought it was some odd joke at first, some student my mother had dragged him to see. But no. It's gearing up for a big summer release. And my father is one of those cool kids thats seen the movie first.

A well-structured movie with two very different storylines that are balanced and intertwine seamlessly. One is extremely dark, centering on the fascist captain of a military outpost in a small village. The captain is played brilliantly and is deeply disturbing -- an unflinching look at power gone wrong, and at how difficult it is to overthrow such evil. The other storyline threatens to become dark, taking place in the labyrinth and the underlying caverns as the girl pursues her destiny -- or is it only happening in her imagination?

Of the special effects, what you see in the previews mostly covers it. I was expecting a lot more little surprises. Still, what was there was done very well.

There were a couple of credibility goofs that bothered me and lady cranefly, but they were overwhelmed by all that was right with the movie.

The casting was brilliant. The guy who played the captain nailed it. Likewise, the women, the doctor, and the soldiers did excellent jobs. The girl did a great job too, though we think in a couple spots her credibility flagged -- but this was more the scriptwriter's (or director's) fault. Her strongest scene was when she put on a tutu and jumped on a trampoline.

This makes for a great family outing. Take your kids, and listen to their screams for years to come.
