It's a wacky comedy about the hottest sport in the country: Pickleball! Except they forgot the comedy.

Jake Johnson plays Dusty "The Hammer" Boyd a former child tennis prodigy who was playing the actual tennis star Andy Roddick in a teen tennis championship when tragedy struck. Years later he is still trying to get his game back at his father's tennis club. He is forced to play the lesser sport of pickleball as a means to rehab his wrist. During play he learns a valuable lesson about....blah blah blah. There is a tennis championship to add pickleball courses at the club. Andy Roddick reappears. And John McEnroe appears to do play by play. It's all very dumb The best thing about the film is McEnroe doing play by play. And McEnroe looks good because everything else is so bad. Poor Ed Harris doing an obvious paycheck job tries to bring a little life to his role, but no.

A 10 episode retro-future series that follows a conman selling lunar real estate who is also trying to connect with his estranged son.

Echos of Paper Moon and The Music Man. Good cast, story, production design.

Came out in 2023. Only one season. Kind of a sleeper. Recommended.

And now I'm watching Shrinking. Jason Segal, Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams and Christa Miller (Drew Carey Show and Scrubs) form the main cast. Segal is a man struggling with the death of his wife and is also a therapist at a practice run by Ford. I'm two episodes in. It's funny and tragic as Segal slowly starts returning to his life after hitting rock bottom. He also wants to be more proactive in his therapy advice, something Ford is dead set against.

Eventually, Brett Goldstein, show creator, will appear on the show as will Michael J. Fox as they deal with Ford's Parkinson.

I've been avoiding this one for awhile, but it got so many good reviews I thought I should give it a shot.

It's every thing you think it will be. Kind of the Top Gun:Maverick on the race track. Pitt plays the aging racer brought back to Formula 1 to help a rookie driver be all that he can be. It's got that Bull Durham vibe, too, as the Rookie isn't all that keen to learn what the old pro can teach him. There are bumps in the road. Literally. Naturally, Brad has a deeper side, looking for that mystic perfect race he chases. Javier Bardem plays it pretty straight as the Team Owner who needs one win on the circuit to keep control of the team. But the way his drivers are fighting it will never happen. But guess what? Sorry, no spoilers. It's a well done formulaic picture with lots of glitz but nothing super special.

And as an aside, how does the sport of F1 make any money? I see these huge teams in these futuristic buildings paying for these very expensive cars and I don't see where the revenue comes from. Is it all TV revenue? Is it something else. Is it like Football where the Americans don't get how popular the sport is around the world? Inquiring minds want to know.

Apple is running a special so I signed back up for the year. I knew I was going to be back in when Ted Lasso returns so I purchased the special

Widow Bay is set on a maybe haunted Island where the mayor is desperate to boost tourism despite while one of the locals sounds the alarm bells that terrible things are about to happened as the creature that inhabits the island is about to awaken.

In the first episode, the Mayor wants everything to go smoothly because a travel reporter from the New York Times is coming to maybe do a feature about the island. Naturally, the island starts to have unexplained power outages and one of the local fisherman goes missing.

In Ep02, the mayor has to spend the night in what could be a haunted hotel. The list of things haunting hotel is quite long from the top floor in the Captain's Suite to a claustrophobic crawlspace in the basement.

The show balances the horror with a strong dose of humor. For instance one of the card games on offer at the hotel is called 'Get Out'. There is a board game called "What happens when Daddy gets home" The whole town is quirky to the max with the mayor at the center struggling to keep it together.

I found seasons 1 and 2, while pretty to look at, to be slow and meandering, leaning into boring. So epic...and simultaneously glacial. Hari Sheldon seems a super annoying know-it-all that you want to slap. I'm not fond of the cast of characters that follow him, either. Lee Pace as Day (the middle clone in Empire's 3 seats) is very wooden.

I was going to give up and didn't bother with Season 3 even tho it came out awhile ago...but I started it and binged it this week. Much better. I barely remember where Season 2 left off, but this one is much better. Still beautiful to look at, but moves much faster, lots going on, but easy to follow. There's a new baddie, "The Mule" who easily controls people with his mind and intends to take over the galaxy and crush both Empire and The Foundation. Lee Pace's Empire discovers drugs and falls in love with a lady and gets to be "The Dude" from Big Lebowski for much of the season, but his acting is way better, especially after that part. The arc of Dusk (the eldest Empire clone) to Darkness is Shakespearean (possibly trying to hard to be so, but the sets and lighting that go with it are great)

There is a plot twist about The Mule revealed at the end that I'm not sure I can accept, but I'm not going to go back and watch the season over to see if it jives. There's a bit of "I'm going to tell you a story and all points are leading there...oh, I didn't tell you this one little thing..."

Anyway, recommended if you can slog thru seasons 1&2 (and I hear it got renewed for another)
Zoe lives in Oxford and sees a house down the road blow up. The survivor was a little girl, and her neighbors' son made a get well card, so she tries to take it to the hospital since it's near her work. But she can't see the girl and the staff is cagey. She starts trying to find out what happened and hires a PI. And it looks like there's a conspiracy. I think we're three eps (out of 8 total) in and it's good. Emma Thompson co-stars.

I was watching a lot of buzz for this new show online from the man who brought you Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul and I thought what the heck? I'll watch the free first episode and be part of the kewl kids who have seen it. What could go wrong?

My god this is a good show and now I will have to renew my Apple subscription to see how this turns out.

It was funny and scary and dystopian and well shot and acted and I'm really invested in Carol and her journey.

What have I done?

I will probably wait until more episodes have dropped before signing up for a month of Apple.

I can't wait that long!

John Krazinski and Padme Amadalla race around the world, following clues in stolen paintings, to find the Fountain of Youth. They are chased by Interpol and the Guardians of the Fountain.

The probably could have called this Indiana John and the Temple of Dumb. I mean John's father in the film was named Harrison. I won't say it was too dumb, but it wasn't very engaging. John and sister Padme spend most of the movie bickering. Neither one is likable. You don't feel any sympathy for the characters because they are being dicks about everything they do. I also expected more from director Guy Ritchie. It feels like he's just going through the motions. The budget must be big because of sets and some of the locations, but Ritchie's usual flair for directing seems to be missing.

The film version of Bono's book about Bono and some bits about U2. I will say the film is beautifully film and assembled and I did enjoy a lot of the bits. But I think I've had too much Bono at this point. I saw a lot of the press he did for this tour. And I had read the book. So it was a bit of a slog. There was a lot of music in the film and I think I prefer the original versions of the songs in most cases. I know most of the stories he tells so there wasn't a lot of new insight but some of the telling was enjoyable.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this film.

Another road trip with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. This time they leave Ewan's home in Scotland, go through a bit of the Netherlands and Germany, up through Scandinavia, back down into Central Europe, and Westward back. They are riding vintage bikes this time, Ewan's is a 1971(?) Ducati, formerly a California CHP bike, and Charley has an old BMW, but if they said a year I didn't catch it.

It's entertaining; they are affable and much of the scenery is great, and it's occasionally amusing. Recommended if you like travel shows.

Seth Rogen directs this behind the scenes look at movie production. When we start, Rogen is just elevated to head of Production for his studio. Bryan Cranston, the owner of the studio, wants him to make a movie about Kool-Aid as there new Intellectual property. I can barely tolerate Rogen and his laugh but he keeps it in check for most of the show. Kudos to Rogen for directing. He likes to use a lot of walk and talks and oners.

I'm enjoying the show because I see a lot of things I know. The Queen could skip it because it is all so painful to watch people have to go against their dreams at almost every turn.

I will continue to watch. I saw a clip where Rogen goes up against Ron Howard, playing himself, and I want to see the full episode.

Murderbot! So much fun. The Queen was ready to watch the whole series last night. Fortunately, only two episodes are out at the moment. Apple also does the thing where you can watch the first episode for free. But the Queen signed us up for a month so we'll be watching lots of shows.

Murderbot is basically a sentient robot that has a human form underneath its armor. Murderbot is sick of humanity and would rather spend its days watching soap operas than having to to interact with humans. The Murderbot's current mission is to protect a group of humans that are investigating a planet. The show, so far, pretty faithfully follows the novellas upon which the show is based.

So far, so good.
