An Agony Christie mystery with neither Marple or Poirot as the lead detective. After a big party at a falling down mansion in the English countryside, one of the guests does not wake up. It's either a suicide or death by misadventure. But Lady Ellen thinks otherwise. The man in question who died had scheduled a date with her for the following week. Lady Ellen wants to find out what happened. But her investigations lead to threats and other people dying around her.

Helena Bonham Carter plays Lady Ellen's mum. Martin Freeman plays an investigator trying to get Lady Ellen to stop.

A little slow at the moment. I'm two episodes in at the moment with only one left to go. There is more a sense of solving a mystery than there was in the latest Knives Out mystery.

Probably a good show for fans of Masterpiece theater.

Tara recommended this and it wasn’t at all what I expected. It’s about a young girl that serves in the forbidden city as a sort of detective using her deep knowledge of poisons. But it’s an anime in Japanese. That was really jamming my brain. Chinese characters in a Chinese setting speaking Japanese in a sophisticated anime style. Plus I’ve been through the forbidden city like 3 times now and the backdrops are extraordinary (cgi foundation no doubt). Don’t know if I’ll watch more. The story and characters are intriguing so I might, just to get a handle on it.

I saw that this is one of the most watched shows currently, so I gave ep 1 a try.

A young man and his intense GF are struggling in the crazy Seoul housing market. One day, the main character's loser dad calls and says he has something for him. He goes to the country to visit his folks and his dad passes the family superpower to him (by force, with no warning). The rules are:

- you have to have cash on your person to use your super power - the more cash you have on you, the stronger your power. The cash will disappear after (leaving some small change in return)
- you have to use your superpower to help others
- you can't use others money
- you shouldn't tell anyone about your power

So, immediately, he tells his GF when he gets home. They experiment to understand the above rules and decide that he shouldn't carry money, help any one, expend any excess energy, etc...

So he's a reluctant hero, and by the end of ep 1, has blown thru a lot of cash.

I like the concept, but the execution is on par with 80's TV series. Not particularly great dialog or acting. Lots of winging. It reminded me a lot of Greatest American Hero. I can easily imagine a studio here remaking it. maybe the pace picks up in later episodes, but I wasn't engaged.

Not recommended.
I've heard a lot of buzz about this one and figured I should check it out someday for the Jujutsu angle. Well, it's not about that at all. It's a lot like Dan Da Dan. The main antihero is a hapless schlub who becomes possessed by eating a demon's finger so he turns into a demon too. He goes to train at a Jujutsu academy where demon hunters train. There are 10 demon fingers (the demon had 4 arms) and after the antihero eats them all, he is to be executed. I see where K-Pop Demon Hunters got the demon patterns. Maybe that's a more universal thing that I knew. The demons are lovecraftian, all mutating eyeballs and teeth everywhere.

There's only one season available here I think, but the show will be dropping season 3 soon on crunchyroll which would be like giving DM a stead heroin IV drip, can NOT subscribe to crunchyroll. Nope. A man's gotta know his limitations.
She plays a Pulitzer Prize winning author who’s had years of writers block after her son was killed in by a drunk driver and her wife left her. Rhys Davis plays an asshole tycoon who moves in Jeff door and may have killed his previous wife.
It’s a decent thriller although a tad heavy on the nerve wracking violin soundtrack. It all hinges on Danes over the top performance and she’s great at playing mentally disturbed characters. I like it so far…

This show had me at hello with a spectacular battlefield one-er. It’s like Squid Games except it’s set in the ronin era and all the games are just sword fights. The lead - Junichi Okawa - even has an expression that echoes Lee Jung-Jae from SG, a desperate trapped gonna-fight-my-way-out look. Okawa is a BJJ guy and moves well.
The plot is an excuse for sword fights. And the sword fights so far are good. Some swirling mass brawls so far and one sweet decapitation.
6 50 min eps. I’m all in.

This is a german program with 3 seasons. I just finished season 1. It’s a slow moving tale about missing children in a small town in the woods with an ominous cave. Spoiler: time travel is involved.

It took a little while to get into it, but I’m enjoying the story. I’m finding it a little hard to keep track of the characters, especially across the different timelines, and they keep introducing new characters.

The tone is a bit like Lost, but much of the time, the actors are standing in a downpour without hats or umbrellas. I’m watching the dubbed version with subtitles which don’t match, and I’m not sure which is better. There’s some good music selections on the soundtrack, eg: Agnes Obel.

It just ended on a cliffhanger, but all 3 seasons are available, so I can jump right into the next one.

Set in 16th century France, this is an 8 ep sword and sorcery mini series made in France.

It’s pretty fun. The first sword fight in ep 1 was surprisingly good ultravi. That caught my attention immediately. Nero is the best assassin from a squad of 7 that serve a manipulative power hungry nobleman. Then there’s a wicked 1-eyed witch, a privileged princess, an illegitimate and abandoned daughter, and a priest worried about the apocalypse. The characters aren’t complex, just enough for this swashbuckler.

It moves along at a steady pace, combining Decent storytelling with action well. What’s pulling me in is the action. There’s been several melees and they’ve all been very satisfactory - some fresh takes on cold arm violence that brutal yet feels authentic. Solid choreographic details, usually only one or a few actions per cut, but a lot of the stabs and kills are graphic (not too gory) and cleverly executed.

I’m 2 eps in and may binge this all quickly, given its addictive pacing.

Gonna go out on a limb here an give this the D00M recommendation based on only seeing a quarter of it so far. Liking this a lot while only a quarter in.

KURUKSHETRA

This is an 18 20+ min episodes series about the great battle of the Mahabharata. This first ep was set up and each ep will center on one of 18 warrior journeys of the epic. It’s cgi animation with a nod to the distinctive style of Indian divine art, which seems a bit dated at first, but by the end of the first ep, i was settling into it. I know the tale relatively well from watching films and tv retellings and reading chunks of it. But the first ep was a lot to follow - i don’t remember all the names of the supporting heroes & villains and to just focus on the war drops us towards the end of a gargantuan epic, so there’s a ton of backstory which isnt readily explained.

Half the eps have dropped; the remainder is coming soon. Not sure if I’m good for all 18 eps but I thin e2 is the Bhagavad Gita so I want to see that.

Not D00M recommended unless you know the Mahabharata

Caught the first two episodes. It's very soapy but enjoyable. Lots of different threads from family interactions to political ones. Even some religious problems because this is Ireland. The guy in charge of building the barrels for Guinness and also the family fixer, Sean Rafferty is the best character so far. So much malevolence. The show does get a bit mumbly at times. I almost turned on closed captioning.

I played the game of "I wonder where they filmed that" because some of it looks accurate and some of it is shite and some times the logic doesn't quite work. But I am enjoying it. You might have to be a hibernophile to get anything out of it, but there is some good class and family struggles going on.

Jude Law owns a hipster restaurant. Jason Bateman is his screw up brother. The restaurant is on the precipice of being really successful but Bateman's gambling debts put all of that in jeopardy.

There is no one to root for in this show. The cinematography is all dark and murky. Everyone has their acting skills turned up to a 11 because this is an important piece of work.

The trailer made this look like so much fun. It is not. I won't be watching more than the first episode.

Everyone in the show is horrible with the exception of one Syrian IT guy who wants to be a police officer.

Set in Scotland but based on a Danish book called Keeper of Lost Causes. The show starts with Detective Carl and his partner investigating a murder. Things go downhill. Back at the police station everyone hates Carl. Carl shows why he is worth hating.

There is parallel story going on of a lawyer trying to convict a man for killing his wife. What makes this problematic is she keeps receiving threatening phone calls.

Eventually Cop Carl and the lawyer's story intertwine.

The story is just getting started. The Scottish accents were so thick at times, I was tempted to turn on captioning. There are flashes of Cop Carl being less horrible but it's early stages yet. The show has echoes of House and Sherlock Holmes with the attitude that I am so much smarter than all of you.

I'll watch more.

Murder at the white house during a state dinner. Seems like they are riffing on The Glass Onion movies, but it works. It's kind of funny. It is ineterstinlgy constructed going from a senate hearing after action discovery to the hours before and after the murder.

Saddest part is Al Franken playing a senator.

As murder mysteries go, I am involved.

The concept is akin to The Way of the Househusband which I love - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=6241

Only here, Sakamoto is a mostly silent, overweight, convenience store owner with a wife and daughter. It’s told from his pupil’s perspective, who can read minds like in Spy Family. So derivative.

This is parsed by anime ultravi which neither of its predecessors have. The violence in those shows is more cartoonish ala looney tunes. This is more sanguineous.

I only watched the premiere. It didn’t grab me except for Sakamoto faintly reminded me of what PPFY might be if he was overweight and an ex-master-hitman (which he still might be - not ruling that out). There’s just something about Sakamoto’s demeanor that’s slightly yeti-esque, and I mean that in a positive way.

Not sure if I’m going to watch more, although eps are short. 3 are up at this writing, I’m assuming more will be released weekly.

Only D00M recommended to confirm my yeti/Sakamoto suspicions.
