It's an OK story, but Marty is an unlikable character and you just want to see him get smacked down so maybe he'll stop being such and asshole. 

The title credit sequence is perplexing (until later in the film).

Also perplexing: the film is set in the mid-fifties, but the soundtrack is heavy with 1980's synth pop, eg: Peter Gabriel's "I have the touch". It doesn't fit at all.

Not terrible...not great. I thought Fran Drescher was good as his mom, and I don't usually like her.

A young girl needs a monster hunter to kill the monster under her bed that keeps eating her parents and foster parents. When she spots Mads Milken doing battle with some thugs on the street, she decides he is the man for the job. But Mads is an assassin and can't have little girls watching him work. His boss, Sigourney Weaver, definitely thinks the little girl is a liability and must do something about the little girl.

For most of the question on the table is whether their is actually a monster or whether the little girl is imaging the monster. The best moment for Mads is he get to live out his Bruce Lee fantasy down to the yellow track suit with a giant footprint on it.

I had forgotten this was a Bryan Fuller story right up until his name rolled in the credits. Fuller channels his inner Wes Anderson with a very shoot, heavy on the production design.

In the end the end, the story was kind of weak. Some of the shootouts and battles were kind of amusing, but nothing extraordinary.]]>

The whole show has the kind of gentle humor you find in Lasso and some of the situations are generally funny. The Dean for instances is fond of taking meetings while doing cold plunges and saunas.

It's a solid doc without anything too revelatory. Although I didn't know he was married before Anne Bancroft and there are three kids from that marriage only one of which appears on camera.

Only at the very end, with a retrospective of Laszlo's work do they give some insight about the passion put into the project that takes the majority of the film.

He roughs up a hair dresser to find the location of his former missus, who happens to be in the town of Banshee. Starr has a lot of backstory about being a thief and his former missus went missing with his share of the loot.

The town of Banshee is run by a corrupt former Amish man. There is a lot of sleight of hand to make Starr the sheriff but it happens. The plot swings between over the top violence and weirdly inappropriate sexual escapades.

The first part is really tense and gripping a weird as everyone tries to make sense of what happened. Then the reason for the disappearance happens and I was a bit disappointed but I guess they had to give a reason. Then the ending goes full crazy and I'm here for that.

The very first 2 min have this haunting choral cacophony over black screen. I thought they the streaming was having problems and that I was getting audio, but no video. I restarted the movie twice before I figured it out. 

There is no music in the film. Just the sounds of the camp in the background - distant yelling, shooting, screaming, but so far away or muffled, that it barely registers. 

There are a couple intercut scenes shot in negative with more haunting audio, but no commentary at all...

Then, the drama just stops and it switches to cleaning ladies at the modern Auschwitz memorial and a very mundane view into their work, but also showing us the extent of Auschwitz's impact. 

It's slow, and hard to watch. It feels voyeristic maybe? Or there's a feeling of helplessness?

I watched this to see how people are making documentaries these days. It helps. It also shows me some pitfalls. This documentary, because of its pedigree, had a lot of money behind it, which meant there was a big camera crew following Hargitay around as she interviews her family. But it also lends itself to a certain amount of phoniness. I love it when people cry in my docs because it shows genuine emotion. But when an actress cries in her own movie about situations she set up for the movie I have to question the authenticity. There is one especially egregious scene at the end where Hargitay is reunited with her mother's piano. Now, she, as the director, set up the shots, knew what was on the call sheet for the day. She still acted surprised when they rolled up the locker room door and she saw the piano. There were a bunch of moments in the doc that hit wrong like that.

Not DOOM recommended unless maybe you are currently wrestling with your own Iron Crotch and want to get some tips.]]>
