Bride marries into an uber-wealthy family and learns that on her wedding night she has to play a game decided upon by a mysterious box to be officially welcomed into the family. She thinks it is weird but, as an orphan, she really wants to belong to the family and agrees to play along. Cool except for the fact the game devolves into a hunt through the house to kill the bride.

Samara Weaving plays the bride. Henry Czerny and Andie McDowell lead the family of game players.

This film was getting all sorts of play because of the release of the sequel. It was supposed to be horror action comedy that everyone loves. Well, almost everyone. The whole film is just a take on The Most Dangerous Game, the short story I'm sure we all read. The family never really seems committed to the killings. Weaving just bumbles along until she realizes the truth of the night, then there is a lot of running and screaming. But the whole thing wasn't adventurous, funny, or scary. Although there was one really good scene that made me wince.

You can skip this. I'll probably watch the sequel for completeness.

Vince Vaughn is a gangster who has traveled back in time to right some wrongs. It had some good ideas, but it could have been much much better. It feels very "Hollywood" - like people in the business phoned it in. It tried to be a little to funny and didn't always land its jokes. It tried to have a could "songs you know from that era soundtrack" but the songs weren't that good. It often had odd jump cuts to a memory sequence that just seemed abrupt.

And in the end, the time paradox doesn't seem to be respected fully.

Is this thing on?

Bradley Cooper directs and co-stars in this film about Will Arnett doing stand-up one night rather than paying the cover at the comedy club. This starts him on the road to being a stand-up comic. Hilarity ensues. Or not. Arnett is struggling with his marriage to Laura Dern and most of his sets talk about his struggles. The movie charts his journey from doing open mic nights to finally getting a guest spot.

The film would be a whole lot better if some of Arnett's comedy was actually funny. But it's not. It's all kind of sad, especially one night after a particularly egregious fight with his wife he just goes on stage and rants. The movie is based on a true story and Cooper is trying to say something about marriage, I guess. But I don't know what that is.

Brendan Fraser plays a struggling actor who takes a job pretending to be a member of various people's families. Melodrama ensues. The whole thing takes place in Japan. I'm not really sure why the character Fraser plays is in Japan, he might have come for a job and never left. But he's there. There's two main threads. In one, he's a reporter talking to an aging actor suffering from early stages of dementia who wants to feel important again. In the other, he plays the absent father returned in order to help a young girl get into a prestigious school. In the end, of course, Brendan learns a valuable life lesson.

I was hoping for a more comedic take but that is not what comes up.

Great cast. Excited to see a new Brooks movie. Not his best work though. Felt like a throwback to movies of the 90s with its silly emphasis on character and plot. Where are the sword fights? Where are the CGI effects? None of that. Just people in situations where they are talking about the problems they face and how they deal with them. Weird.
The Queen really liked this. I felt it was fine.

Meh. In this installment, evil big corp wants to take over, squishing good smaller corp in the process. This time around, instead of accidentally getting sucked into the digital world via laser, the process is reversed and digital assets can be brought into our world (like 3-D printing). Big corp is trying to get government contracts for it, but the problem is that these digital transfers only last for ~25min. Flynn had the secret to "permanence" and everyone is racing/battling to get it.

It wasn't that engaging for me. I didn't particularly think the soundtrack worked. The effects were too much, yet didn't add much. I liked it best when there was a nostalgic throwback sequence to the CGI of the first film which was groundbreaking in its day. Jarod was a program brought to live and so gets to be "wooden", which he's pretty good at, but not compelling.

I will say that I liked this installment better than the previous one. CGI "The Dude" was pretty bad last time. Here, I think they just got Jeff Bridges actual. And the writing, tho far from stellar, was no worse than any of the previous ones.

Not really recommended, unless you are trying to view the complete set...

I'm putting Hulu content here now because my Hulu app
Is broken and I have to watch Hulu offerings via Disney and rumors are that Disney is going to kill the Hulu app anyway...

I'm not sure when in the alien-verse this is supposed to take place, but a crew is on board a Weylan-Yotani science vessel returning to earth, loaded with specimens (yeah, those specimens). Prior to introducing us to the crew, there's a screen readout explains that there are three group/types vying for dominance: cyborgs, synthetics and hybrids (I forgot the last one)...any way, it feels like a heavy handed way to say that this is what this story line will be about...

Back to the crew: very much a throwback to the first alien movie with each actor having a similar persona - frustrated grunt worker, by the book company person, etc. I think there was even an orange cat... During the exposition, we learn that earth is run by 5 companies including a new one run by a young trillionaire. We cut to a young girl getting some procedure where she is downloaded into a synthetic body.

Later, the research vessel crash lands on earth (probably intentionally, because THE COMPANY...) and many teams rush to rescue people at the crash site and any onboard the ship.

Hilarity ensues...

I'm liking it so far. I think they are doling out the story at a good oace and keeping the stupid quotient low.

Oliphant plays a synthetic who looks an awful lot like Billy Idol.

Recommended so far...

This is Disney? Well, actually it's Hulu.

Kill is a Hindi film - that's right Bollywood. But there's never been Bollywood like this. This is pure ultravi in all its over-the-top sanguineous glory. It's a simple plot, as most decent ultravis are - two commandos are on break and one is following his lover, who just got engaged to another, on a train. Then a dacoit (bandit) family takes over the train. It's up to the commandos to save everyone.

The premise allows for some top notch close-quarter combat and being India, there aren't many guns, at least not until the end, which opens the door to plenty of hand-to-hand, lots of knives, and plenty of improvised weapons like fire extinguishers and lighter fuel containers. The main punk villain (who, of course, finds the commando's lover) wields a kukri with visceral savagery. And this film goes a few unexpected places. It's merciless and brutal - the kind of fights where you throw a knife into an opponent's eye and then kick it through his skull for good measure. Gratuitous throat slitting.

I was dumbfounded to see India cinema go this way. There's often been a brutal side to Indian auctioneers, like cops sodomizing prisoners to torture them, but that's always off screen. This was an in-your-face blood spatter fest. Relentless. Stylish. There's an underlying morality which denies the stakes, but the violence overshadows everything.

Not for the faint at heart. D00M recommended for those of us who still bask in sanguinousity.

A very romanticized version of a young Dylan. Guthrie, Seeger, Baez & Cash are characters, along with his band mates for the electric Newport Festival, which is the climax of the story. I liked how the lyricism told the story. Chalamet’s Dylan impression is prettier, less nasal, more easily digestible. Even though he tries to portray the asshole side of Dylan, Chalamet is too handsome and in tune to feel really authentic. And yet, as a simplified biopic, it’s okay. It gives some interpretation of Dylan’s lyrics, some context, like I said - simplified. I enjoyed it even though it bent the sound of Dylan to be more easy listening.

In a way, I enjoyed I’m Not There better -http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=1176 - because that tried to amplify the mystery, where this film veered more towards softening the blows and hailing Dylan for his genius. Nevertheless I still enjoyed it.
O'Dessa

I almost bailed at the halfway point. This is one of those films that had a lot of potential but missed. The lead Sadie Sink played Annie and has pipes, but she’s given these middling country-ish tunes. She’s a ‘rambler’ a traveling troubadour and a ‘chosen one’ in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by a media mogul who hypnotizes the population with a tv eye powered by the toxin that has polluted the world & is also the drug of choice when smoked out of a dead fish. It had potential for some deliciously psychedelic scenes but the whole film looks like a throwback to 80s sci-fi - gaudy, run down, tossed together from second hand stores. The music moments fall flat, despite Sink’s fair performances. It’s predictable, plodding and ultimately not the potential parody it might have been. The ending was good, but not reward enough payout to justify the rest of it.

I sat down for my supper and flipped this on by chance and wouldn’t ya know it? It was Stevie’s set. Caught her, Joan Jett, Katy Perry, Dave Grohl, a few others. I stopped at RHCP because I got sleepy and seeing them as aging rockers was kinda depressing. Nevertheless, I might go back and surf for some of the stand out acts. Good to see a benefit concert again. I’ve worked a few benefits - the earthquake benefit and the AIDS benefit were awesome as was every Bridge benefit.

Very enjoyable. Learned some factoids about the Sherman Brothers & P.L. Travers, plus there’s a lot of archival footage and recording that were fresh to me. A lot of thr celebrity talking heads adoring the film was a bit obvs, but the original cast and crew stuff was solid. The significance of this film, as well as the Sherman Brothers, were given due praise. Both were absolutely key to the foundation of the empire franchise that is Disney today.
This has its moments but felt underwhelming in the end. I didn’t learn anything impactful, just a lot of trivia around their US tour. It’s assembled well - some keen documentarian moments - although some of it felt like Scorsese was phoning it in. He’s the producer with Tedeshi in the director’s chair, but he’s the key interviewer, often off screen (the subtitles helped because the denoted when it was Scorsese talking even when he was off camera). Several of the talking heads felt irrelevant or of little consequence. There’s a bit about Paul going through a photo gallery exhibit of their US tour and I’d rather have just seen that uncut. The original footage is cool too because that Beatles banter is always satisfactory.

This was a bit of all right. I think we all know John William's music and this was a really good overview, hitting all the high notes of his really long career. They give a good account of his upbringing and what made him a composer. I kept thinking his first bit was the theme to Lost in Space, but he did a ton of work before then. Great bunch of talking heads from the ones you expect to the ones you don't, but seem so right when you hear them.

You get a sense that he is a beloved and revered figure. I seem to remember a time in the 1980s/1990s when his reputation wasn't quite so stellar. I guess you have to really look at the whole to see what a tremendous achievement his life has been so far.

On a personal note, don't watch a really well made documentary when you are in the middle of struggling through putting your own documentary together. It's not pretty.

Jim Henson Idea Man
With Ron Howard at the helm, you know this will have all the good feels. We all grew up with his work and know the major plot points but I didn’t know much about the man, his life, his drive and his origins. It’s engaging although I felt the end was a bit rushed. His work after Labyrinth is only cursorily mentioned (and honestly I didn’t follow him that much afterwards). But it was decent overall, or at least the momentum of the early revelations of his career was enough to carry my attention through. I knew nothing of his backstory or the bts issues he had, particularly with launching the Muppet Show and my fav muppets after Yoda, the SNL ones. My respect for his work is solidified.
