This started out great. A stylish period piece where the images were bleached almost to B&W, with only flesh tones and some accented colors. The first scene, which you can see in the trailer above, had some nice bokken and spear sparring. I was like 'yeah! ultravi samurai style!'

After that, it's talk, talk, talk. Lots of discussion of the political issues they have when the Tokugawa shogun is demanding contributions for a dam project and that would tap this clan's secret cash cache. And it turns out that the sword master is a spy for the shogun, so he must be taken out. And someone must be blamed. But talk, talk, talk, with no soundtrack, gets tiresome. Stab someone already.

Then at the end, the fall guy gets hunted down by the rest of the clan and has to take everyone down. That was ok, kinda frenetic fight choreo, but by then, I was so exhausted from all that talking, that I was nodding off. Had to rewind to see the final duel because they started talking before it.

To it's favor, there are two characters named after my dog - Yukii, a background swordsman and Yuki, the only female character and sister of the fall guy (yeah, this fails the Bechdal test pretty badly).

Not D00M recommended unless you have trouble sleeping. If so, just watch the middle part.

Tollywood Scarface but instead of cocaine, this syndicate smuggles red sandalwood. It’s tollywood big with dance numbers using 50-100 backup dancers, some sprawling truck convoys through scenic mountain forests, and some weak cgi of logs going down waterfalls. The rise is straightforward. A cocky coolie with no fear and ridiculous fighting skills works his way up into a family of smugglers. There’s a rival cop hit on his tail. And there’s a silly romance with wild dance scenes.

The fight choreo was over th top slo mo, with Pushpa sending bodies flying. At one point, he kicks a villain in the nuts and sends him flying like 10 feet in the air. Ow. There’s another fight where his hands are tied behind his back and he has a sack over his head being chased by a few dozen baddies through the jungle and he takes them all out (one of the best flying head butts ever).

At nearly 3 hours, it could’ve finished but no - this is part 1. Part 2 - the Rule - came out in 2024 and I’ll have to hunt that down.

See? All the crimes take place along the 101 Freeway in LA. But people are missing the point what this really is is an undercover MCU project.

Thor is an emotionally stunted high class jewel thief. Hulk is a detective on the way out with his police peers because he has a wild theory about the MO for the thief. Meanwhile, Storm sells insurance to billionaires. She is also dissatisfied with her job because they keep passing her over for promotion despite landing some really big clients. The Hulk creator fences the stuff Thor steals. The Eternal Druig is a hot headed who wants to take Thor's place as the premiere thief along the 101 corridor.

I liked this movie based on a book by Don Winslow. Had a good look and feel. Thor gets to stretch a little as a thief with no life because of his abusive childhood. Storm continues to turn her acting up to 11 every chance she gets, but she is kind of good as a fading beauty about to be discarded. And schlubby Hulk fights to prove he's right.

The only problem with this film is that the ending is a bit weak. You can see the bit zinger coming from a mile away and some of it doesn't make much sense. But up until that final scene or two the show was doing a good job of keeping me interested. This despite the fact the movie (and my whole house) kept switching off and on the first time I tried to watch it.

Have mercy and skip this one. It’s all cgi effects, mostly the floating screen from Minority Report. There’s a few good twists (i did guess the first one) but not worth the stilted performances and silly ruminations about AI threats. The whole movie falls flat, one of those stories where you’re watching all these effects thinking this had a bit of potential but just never gets there.
You know what would’ve made this work? If it was all made by AI, it would’ve been so much better. The irony (but irony gets lost on AI).
Not D00M recommended at all. If you watch it, my sacrifice of an hour and a half would be in vain.

A live action based on an anime, I’ve read this is a prequel (the anime is set in modern times - this is set in medieval Japan and the main heroine is the ancestor of the character of the same name in the anime). It’s female strong, clearing the Bechdel test by a long-shot. A young gal has Thor powers in that she can emit electricity (using a 90s special effect). There’s the fox clan of ninjas that wear white fox masks (masked ninjas can be slain without regard to reuse because the mask obscures repeats. And there’s another clan with goofy anime villains, a gal with a jian. A big dude wifh a gnarly mace, and plenty of ninjas with swords. The fights are ok, decent complexity and not too bloody. There’s an early gal on gal sword fight. Tbis stars the legendary Yasuake Kubota as the clan leader. Enjoyed it overall, enough thst I’ll check out the sequel when it comes. Not great but good enough for me to check out the sequel. Theres a lot of father daughter dynamics which always resonates.
A catty fivesome of ballerinas are on the way to a prestigious competition in Hungary and their bus breaks down. They walk to a funky inn, but it’s really a hangout for gangsters run by a psycho Uma Thurman who was a ballerina until she suffered a permanent injury. All hell breaks loose and the ballerinas must fight their way out.

It’s a slim premise, surely the fallout from Ballerina, but it’s 87north, the reigning kings of ultravi, so I gotta watch to keep my fan card. Nowadays, 87N is delivering films they enjoy making, stuff that shows of their choreographic panache, and not necessarily that good on any other level. The fights here are ok - the ballet schtick is creative and funny, but akin to Love Hurts, underwhelming for their usual fare. I confess, I thought the claw hammer getting stuck in a villain’s head was funny. And the ballet melee works ok for laughs and stunts. I also liked the box cutter blade toe shoes despite their unfeasibility. My biggest disappointment was when Princess (the snooty ballerina) walks into a room of swords but chooses a crossbow. There’s a psychedelic trip in the beginning which is mildly funny but underdeveloped and quickly abandoned. This film does have good gal power.

Not overly D00M recommended. It might amuse PPFY for an hour and a half if he has nothing better to do.

Anyone else get a mild elation watching Nicole apply stick deodorant to her armpit? No one?

Nicole plays Scarpetta, a top forensics doc, chasing down a serial killer who she put away years ago in her career establishing case - but she may have been wrong. See Nicole do grizzly autopsy stuff with detailed graphic props. See her drink coffee and smoke cigs. She her put on deodorant because mortician works stinks.

It’s ok. It moves back in time a lot with a completely different younger cast playing the characters from a decade prior, which gets a little confusing if you’re not paying attention until the next deodorant scene.
Nicole’s husband I le the mentalist. But the best part of this show is that Jamie Lee Curtis plays Nicole’s loud sister and the argument scenes between Nicole & Jamie Lee are great. The two actresses fed off each other in a dynamic sibling rivalry. Both actresses shine in those scenes.
This is Guy Ritchie lite, or Guy Ritchie made-4-tv. It’s got his usual themes, a major bromance between Sherlock & Moriarty, rollicking fistacuffs, protags with macho punkish attitudes, some swirling cinematography, rocking modern jigs, but not much profanity or graphic violence. Sherlock iz at Oxford with Moriarity, and we meet Mycroft and Lestrade. All in all, about what you’d expect. Honestly Sherlock is up there with Spider-man when it comes to different versions of him. What I didn’t expect was a Kung Fu Princess. It’s not particularly good Kung Fu, but it’s all about Chinamaxxing right now, isn’t it (so why am I not cashing in more? Too ABC maybe).
A decent doc, mostly about Paul in the wake of the Beatles, through the Wings years. There was some nice animation/montage segues and the music was very fitting for the topic. It’s Paul and Linda justifying themselves and they make some solid points - a few good revelations for me but I didn’t follow Wings that well. Several insightful interview clips.

Back at Castle Highland, DM once dropped acid & listened to all the Beatles albums chronologically when he had the house to himself. It times out well for a trip for so many reasons. DM’s conclusion that it was much more about Paul than he previously thought. That violin bass is so profound.
I’ve seen Paul 4x - 2 i documented here: https://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFo...p?tid=1996

WTH? #3? I knew nothing of this trilogy so I had to watch it.

Pegasus (2019) is a comedy drama about a car rally race in Xinjiang called the Bayanbulak. It’s centered around a 5x champion of the rally who got busted for racing in an illegal rally and was consequently barred making a comeback. He’s got no sponsors but he reassembles his old crew and they go for it. The race is insane, switchbacks on mountain cliffs - a lot of cgi but well done. Most of the humor centers around the main driver as he’s degenerated into a schlub trying to rekindle his glory days. There are some mildly funny moments and some overdone sentimentalism. Lots of racing, which is a genre that’s never worked that well for me, although the drifting cars on cliffs was visual. The ending was almost French in its sudden existentialism - it reminded me of a Mishima short story about a test pilot flying too high.
It’s based on the director, Han Han, who was a rally racer and the characters are based on real racers. Some of it did feel revelatory, like an insider’s peek into the sport.
Not going to D00M reccomend this unless you’re really into race car films.

Pegasus 2 was a 2024 hesuipian (new year film) that reunites most of the cast. I wanted to see it just to find out how the ending of part 1 was resolved and watched it through (the resolution was pithy). The lead, Zhang Chi, gets another shot at the Bayanbulak when the maker of knock-off cars sponsors a team. I felt this was a better story. The characters are a bit more developed and the comeback story hits a little harder.
It’s called Pegasus because his son has a vision of his dad having a Pegasus patronis. that was in the first film; the son is written out of the sequel and only appears in an explanatory phone call that explains why he’s away. There are some odd cgi moments beyond the Pegasus patronis, like when he gets funding, the car assembles around Zhang like an iron man suit.
Again, kinda predictable - sports films almost always end in a win.
There’s no women characters in either of these films.

Not D00M recommended either. More my PRC cinema research than enjoying the movie, although they were ligh entertainment and both films brought forth a chuckle.

Still not D00M recommended and I don’t feel the need to run out and watch part 3 on the big screen. Might watch it when it comes to a streamer.

I decided to celebrate earning my first black belt with a jidageki flick and this had been popping up as an Amazon recommendation for while now. It was surprisingly good. Lots of sword fights. Like the whole last half hour was sword fights. And they’re decently choreographed, complex multi-action single takes. It centers around two rogue ninja hawtties who don armor - shinguards, vambraces, chest guards and shoulder pads of metal which allows them to block swords in odd ways. There’s a gay shogun and his lover fencing sparring partner who has a dad, an older brother and younger sister who are all sword masters and a traumatized hawtty that plays with a pinwheel until she touches a sword and all her martial skill is triggered. It looks like it’s filmed on made-for-tv video with some cheesy ninja bomb effects. The the sword fights are ok, not mind blowingly fresh or violent, but consistently a dozen plus actions for each take. Good work. It’s not too sanguineous - one of the spit blood and die flicks - you know when some who gets a lethal blow because they spit blood.

Satisfying in an undemanding way. Mildly D00M recommended. You could do a lot worse wifh an hour and a half.

This is a spin off of another anime that some of my dojo mates (the collegians) are fascinated by and are chomping at the bit over a theatrical movie coming out for this franchise.

It’s about these girls who have horse ears and tails, and run super fast. They race like racehorses. They’re named after famous racing horses. I can’t quite grok it.

The original series (based on a video game I believe) is Umamusume: Pretty Derby I think. It’s a typical high school anime, such a prevalent setting for the genre. It’s off kilter but good for year of the horse I suppose. I’ll watch a few more just to get to the bottom of this…

It’s feeling like the Russos are done. This is a mediocre pirate adventure at best. Pryanka is a former indentured servant turned pirate captain turned fishwife (their term) trying to live a peaceful life on a small island with her sister in law and disabled son. Karl is a vengeful captain, someone Pryanka stabbed and then took his gold. Temuera is Karl’s quartermaster. The fights are ok. Pryanka sells action astonishingly well. The choreo is brutal slash, chop & stab, but not particularly fresh, and not worthy of as much screen time as it occupies. She’s left to hold all this up on her own because the rest of the cast is just phoning it in. The Bluff is Pryanka’s bat cave, full of booby traps and buried treasure. Tbis is one of those movies that’s frustrating because they have a decent cast and spent some money on the sets but it just doesn’t come together.
This is one of the most brutal films I have ever seen. It’s about the Japanese invasion of Nanjing, and it’s all atrocities. It was also China’s Oscar submission but it didn’t get into the finals. It’s an impossibly hard watch. Mass killings, rape, beheadings, baby death - let’s just go with that one fo a taste. The Japanese stage a photo shoot to show how happy nanjingers are during the occupation. A baby is crying. A soldier grabs the baby and throws it to the ground, killing it. Then the dead baby is placed in the arms of one of the protagonists, an opera singer posing as the wife of a postman posing as a film developer and they are told to smile for the photo.

The main story is about the real life photos of the atrocities, how they came to be and how they are smuggled to foreign press. A postman poses as a film developer to survive because the Japanese military photographer needs his photos developed quickly, and the postman find the real film developer hiding with his family in the basement of his photo shop. The are joined by the opera singer and a wounded soldier, aided by a translator.

Chinese stories love sacrifice and each character endures overwhelming and inevitably the ultimate sacrifices. It’s a constant barrage of cruel war crimes, many go way past tolerable watching, partially becasje their graphic (so many people set on fire or shot in the head, so many firing squads) but the level of psychological warfare is just unbearable, especially for a 2 1/2 hour epic.

I’m glad to have watched it because it’s a significant Chinese film, but I’ll never want to watch it again. Another scene that really got me was a dog cuddling with its dead master.

Only D00M recommended if you’re interested in one of the darkest chapters of this war, or you’re just in a masochistic mood (like I can never unsee that masochistic).
