Got the online screener for this because I might be interviewing my ol' cast mate Marko.

This is such a Marko project. He produced, choreographed and acted in it. It has his Chilean accent, and is almost an homage to 80s grindhouse action (at least that's how I'll play it). There's even an odd focus on food - Marko obsesses over what he eats - how he fuels his instrument. Given his physique, I can't argue with that.

The hardest thing about Marko is that he's huge and cannot find opponents that are his size. That typecasts him as the villain, like with John Wick 4. Here he plays a duel role, twins, good Marko and evil Marko. I got kinda lost on which was which. One is shaved bald and the other has long hair, but both of their moral bases were dubious.

The plot is mostly an excuse to have fight scenes and many are quite good, but few match Marko in skill. The final villain is a silat guy (I think) and has interesting skills but is still shorter than Marko. There's a good kill, a head stomp (which is a theme) and then the condor comes. Ultimately, Marko doesn't fight Marko for a finale fight. It's sort of a continued next sequel sort of ending.

Condor style is a fusion of wushu eagle claw and capoeira.

Not quite D00M recommended. It doesn't go anywhere that fresh. But we should support Marko in my way of thinking.

Hope the interview comes through. It'll be good to reconnect with Marko.

This is a Taiwanese Kung Fu flick based on a Shaio Yi story - the father of the founder of Immortal Studios, the comic book company that I work for. It’s actually the first Shaio Yi story I’ve seen - his books aren’t translated.

It’s full of classic cliches, bwahahaing villains, victims dying just as the utter the name of their killer, avenge avenge avenge!

It’s female strong. Two female assassins make a bunch of brutal hits killing dozens of guards. It’s a hot daughter of a rich swordsman and her governess, who are undercover. Then there’s a flashback revealing the savage backstory. Then lots of people get stabbed.

It’s got some brutal stuff for 69. Sanguineous for those times, rape (nothing exposed) and an absolutely ruthless baby killing. Kinda shocking.

The fight choreo is mediocre. The cinematography struggles to copy some of the great HK stuff but doesn’t quite succeed. Must be kept in context of the times though. The version I saw was horribly overexposed and washed out.

But still, it was interesting. The story had its moments and I could see it being remade into some tasty ultravi. It’s just very dated now.

Man, I gotta finish this Rajamouli piece and get out of this rabbit hole.

A petty thief gets a magic necklace from a girl as a child. She is told that it will signify her prince. He keeps trying to get rid of it, but it follows him incessantly. She grows to be an heiress yet a slave to her family. He remains a petty thief, working for a hawt fence who scams him so he winds up ending her money. In frustration, he curses Yama, the god of death. Yama loses face before the other gods and arranges for him to die prematurely. But then he takes over hell…

I could go on - this is only about half of a nearly 3 hour movie.

I’m seeing Rajamouli’s formulas. He loves karmic/fate tales and the gods are very much alive in his films. I feel you need to have a grasp of Indian gods to get that.

His fight choreography is ridiculous with bodies flying everywhere - here the main hit man gets punched so hard in a slow mo face wobbling close up from the blow so hard that an eyebrow piercing gets blown out the other side of his head. Yea, that earned the dm patented ultravi chuckle.

His dance numbers are explosive - everything I want from Tollywood dance scenes and more. The thief is N T Rama Rao jr aka NTR. In a dance off where he steals Yama’s hawt threesome dancers, he echoes Michael Jackson, and then dances with his real life grandfather who was also a movie star (and politician) who is digitally imposed because he’s dead.

There’s also a theme of the thief not being able to leave a temple or he will die - akin to that other movie based on Keaton.

He shows of temple ruins well as panoramic backdrops. His sense of cgi kingdoms is cheesy and overblown yet aesthetically delightful.

He works up to these absurdly sentimental climactic moments that give me the feels unexpectedly - themes of devotion and sacrifice that are refreshingly moral and moving.

Watched on YouTube with subtitles and commercials (lots of commercials).

Not D00M recommended. This was my least favorite of his films so far.

This was another SS Rajamouli film - his earlier big budget blockbuster.

Watched on YouTube. YT has a lot of foreign films. I found several full length versions in Telugu or dubbed to Hindi - none had subs. Turns out that like so many martial arts films, it’s not absolutely necessary to know what is being said.

It’s another tale of reincarnation. The protagonist is Ram Charan who was in RRR only here he reminded me of Jack Black (if he was svelte, buff and Indian… and wore mascara). His rival has a mullet and side chops which are universally villainous - he’s a rich Sikh who kills people at his random whim. The love interest is Kajal Aggarwal, who is a major tollywood star but new to me and she was adorable and alluring with gorgeous huge eyes and lovely lips that could handle the overacting style of Tollywood flirty coyness with a panache.

It’s a modern day tale of a love triangle where one courter is a stud on a motorbike and the other kills the girl's dad and blames the stud. But they are all reincarnations of royalty from 400 years ago and halfway through (which is an hour and a half in - the length of most Hollywood movies) it flashes back to the last and I could see the primordial ventures into what would become Bahubaali - outrageous CGI architecture with overdone pomp and absurd fight choreo enhanced by copious buckets of digital blood.

Here is SS in a raw form. He’s still sorting his vision and it’s not fleshed out yet. It’s gravity defying and once again, his comments about flying when I interviewed him ring true. It also defies logic. Here’s a taste - the first dance number (note that this is Ram but not Rajal - this gal disappears after this scene).

So that boob blast that turns men into stone is never explained. It just happens. I don’t know why. The film never comes back to it.

The CGI is remarkably bad considering how advanced India is in tech, but that enhances the cheesiness of it all. My fav part was the last half when they were in the 400 years ago cgi overkill. That was such the Bahubaali precursor. There’s some decent sword fights and the villain has a brutal golden spiked mace worthy of his villainy.

Not D00M recommended, even for my fellow indocinemaphike cf. it’s not coherent enough on the whole. While it has its moments (I mean who can resist Medusa-like boob blasts) and I’d push you towards RRR first.

Another Michelle Yeoh, although she was Michelle Khan back then.

I mistook this for Royal Warriors, her 2nd film after an unsuccessful search for Yes, Madam, her first lead role.

This is one of those goofy HK Kung Fu comedies. Michelle is a martial arts master and biplane pilot who dons a leather flight jacket and whip ala Indiana Jones. Her mission is to rescue Youda (not Yoda but that's what I thought they were saying at first) who is a leader of a settlement in Mongolia that's being invaded by Japanese. Michelle is supposed to connect with Agent 001, but the clue, a watch, is stolen by a petty thief played by veteran HK long-faced comedian Richard Ng. Let the hijinks begin.

It's great to see Michelle at 25 when she was more of a cutie starlet. And her skills are sharp, great fights, some nice rope dart and staff fighting exhibited, along with her dynamic leg skills. She was great a scissor kicks.

Cast in minor roles are superkicker Hwang Jang Lee, legendary Ku Feng, and everyone's best selfie friend Chiu Chi Ling (another non-speaking role - he's just a background henchman).

Not particularly D00M recommended.

Seen on YouTube, a dubbed version with cheesy dubbing, but it's a cheesy movie so that was fine.

Another in my Yeoh Den research binge.

I remember watching this with ED around when it came out. We were knocked out by the helicoptering motorcycle move and that sold us on it’s a sure outrageousness. This movie is so bad that it’s awesome.

Michelle plays Ching which I already like. Ching is a tortured lovelorn villainess who fights with a whip chain. Maggie Cheung is a punk biker assassin who uses a double barreled shotgun and boomerang knives. Anita Mui is a masked caped heroine who throws weird darts and has a belt sword. There’s a demon stealing babies. His righthand henchman #9 uses a flying guillotine.

This unapologetically defies physics at every turn. Some of it doesn’t even make sense but once you give that a pass, the ridiculousness consumes you in that ‘who the heck thought of that?’ way. Johnny To directs and the effects are so cheesy, it’s almost art. Pre-cgi so all effects and stunts are in camera, which cranks the cheese factor to 11+. There are scenes like constantly swirling papers in a lab clean room. Maggie launches herself into battle by straddling an empty oil drum and tossing dynamite into it.

And along with the caricature superheroes, there’s a lot of senseless death of bystanders (I mentioned the flying guillotine - whenever one of those is in play, it means gratuitous beheading. There’s random baby death. This film just can’t make up its mind about what it wants to be, which makes the result even sillier.

The three actresses are at their cheekiest and sexiest. It’s like Charlie’s Angels meets Adam West Batman. Psychotropic grindhouse HK cinema ftw. It remains a delight in its unabashed approach as if the director has a bunch of stuff in his mind and threw it up in our faces to let us sort it out. It’s not about plot. It’s about hitting these random scenes that border on visionary, at least for a low budget B film.

It’s also female strong. The trio is on top of everything, in control. The men are all kind of clueless, especially the spouses.

I remember the sequel wasn’t good. Won’t go back that that for this binge.

D00M recommended for its absurdity (this might not work for everyone) Seen dubbed on YouTube (the dubbing sux - the original language is so much better).

Morena as a mastermind villainess? I'm so in.

So dumb. Like a CW take on Money Heist done by NBC. Morena is supposed to be Russian and her accent is worse than my fake Russian accent (I don’t do a fake Russian accent at all). The rest of the characters are ridiculous - mostly cops right now but they’re teasing some of the thieves. Each character is a tired stereotype caricature. There’s a disgraced cop with an attitude who is Morena’s adversary in one of those mastermind chess games, but the cop is weak. Don’t know that actress. Don’t care. To oppose Morena, she needs to be better.

The backstory had a decent twist. But it’s silly so far. Morena is a queenpin - she literally tells the cops to ‘bow down to the queen’. And you know what? I’ll bow. I’ll watch another ep, just to see Morena vamp it up with her horrid rusky accent.
Don’t judge.

After NY Ninja (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=6836) I fell into the John Liu rabbit hole. ZKD is Liu’s own invention and he did promote it in Paris, plus he made this odd flick. Liu plays himself in his fantasy Paris where martial rivals challenge him a lot.

It’s incoherent, as if someone just spliced together a bunch of half baker ideas for stories, in hopes of justifying a lot of absurd fight scenes. At the end, it just kind of dissolves. I suppose it’s existential - that’s the French part. But overall, it’s incoherent.

The fight choreo is ridiculous but Liu and some of the others have skill, so despite being unconvincing, they are acrobatically impressive. Liu is a super kicker with an extraordinary right leg.

There’s so much randomness - flailing attempts at artsy fartsy style that almost work for the 80s but mostly come off like ‘huh?’ It’s a nice snapshot of many Parisian tourist spots with few tourists.

They just shot this in the streets. You can see people in the background just passing by minding their own business while peeps are fighting high kicking duels in gis - sometimes a bystander glances towards the camera with a wtf? expression.

There’s this funky soundtrack that plays well when Liu gets in the ZKD zone.

Lots of women in bikinis. In fact, I think every actress is only wearing a bikini.

This would make a fine D00M flick. It’s just so absurd but there’s entertainment value there too.

Seen on YouTube with ads and Spanish subtitles (it’s in English).

The 2nd highest grossing film of 2021 (beat by Spidey), the highest grossing Chinese film and non-English film so far, the biggest Chinese budget ever, by three top directors, Tsui Hark, Chen Kaige, and Dante Lam, and starring wushu champ Wu Jing.

This film is big. And long. Nearly three hours.

There are some massive scenes - huge battles - couldn't tell how much was CGI but several scenes looked like hundreds if not thousands of soldiers. That was impressive. And some of the landscapes were stunning.

It was commissioned by the CCP propaganda dept (that's what it's called - at least the chicoms are honest about calling it propaganda). It's a chapter of the Korean war about the People's Volunteer Army going up against ... yeah, US troops. It's rough. MacArthur comes off poorly. American soldiers are bleating, living in comfort of Thanksgiving feasts, with air strikes and tanks. The Chinese are in the freezing snow, eating tiny moldy potatoes.

There's some major action pieces. The first big battle happens at the one hour mark and rocks for like twenty minutes of explosions and ultravi.

Wu is a commander, saddled with his young punk brother. Their other brother was KIA in a previous campaign. The other soldiers have a rugged nobility and are brimming with patriotic self sacrifice.

Did I like it? Well, it's a fast forward to the fight scenes. The length of it put me off. Honestly, I don't know much about the Korean War beyond what I learned in M.A.S.H. This is overly historical, spending way too much time introducing significant generals and such. There's a subplot about Mao and his son that could've been completely cut.

Wu Jing was good, like he always is.

Only D00M recommended for the fight scenes tho. Not sure how D00M is with anti-American propaganda. It doesn't phase me much. In fact, it kinda fascinates me.

Part two drops in two weeks for Lunar New Year. It's gonna be huge too. There was a huge teaser trailer at the end of this for that. It's poised to take the box office in PRC, and consequently the world.

The story of a young boy from Steubenville Ohio who climbed to the pinnacle of entertainment success. I was never a big Martin fan. He always seemed miscast in the movies I saw him in. But I was curious why everyone else thought he was so popular and the movie does make a strong case for it. They do use an odd conceit of asking all their talking heads what was Martin's Rosebud, what did he look back on in his life that he regretted/loved the most? I'm going to say that doesn't quite work. But they didn't get a wide range of interviews from Bob Newhart to RZA. Yes, RZA. RZA was also from Steubenville. Lots of interviews of family, too.

They did go in depth about Lewis and Martin's relationship and what led to the breakup.

I now know more about Martin. It's still not going to make me watch his films.

The first great Kung Fu horror comedy that launched a lasting franchise and a slew of imitators. I could’ve sworn I watched this last year or so but couldn’t find a thread. I remembered it well enough but maybe it’s because I was more impressionable in the 80s so more stuff stuck.

The humor, horror and great Kung Fu come together perfectly here and each story arc has its amusement. It’s a good example of 80s HK filmmaking.

It’s still great. The martial arts is amazing - full of big falls and high flying hijinks that reek of Sammo. who produced this but wasn’t the choreographer. Most of the actors do their own stunts. And there’s some solid stunts - some big jumps like from the 2nd story to the ground and a terrifying fire stunt, something lost in the era of cgi. I’m amazed that even those cheeses 80s effect work here.

I watched this in anticipation of Den’s call for Halloween related pieces. They did that last year and I gave them an overview of the chinese ghost story franchise.

Sword fights! Well, there’s a magic Daoist sword that glows but the vampires don’t wield.

Totally D00M recommended. I watched it on Youtube but if you e never seen this, great yourself to a better version.

This film rocked me when it came out. It's a goofy HK farce about an undead cop with a pregnant wife. He's trying to catch some bank thieves and see his son get born before his time is up. It's uproariously NPC with gay and buxom prostitute jokes, and some extreme conflict resolutions that just make you stand back and wonder who the heck wrote this and where did they think they were going with it. Breast milk and baby pee. Srsly?

It's a perfect example of what I luved about HK film back then - so irreverent and unapologetic. So unabashedly puerile.

I have a fond memory of watching this with ED while under the influence and having a blast. Those were the days.

No sword fights but big knives, shovels, chainsaws, and an intense fire stunt when you remember that that was real fire back then - no such thing as CGI. Highly DOOM recommended.
