This was at Cannes and earned a very limited US theatrical run this week. Only one showing a day in the Cruz, and I doubt it’ll last into next week.

It's a beautiful film - gorgeous locations and costumes - but not a lot of action. Mostly political intrigue. The few sword fights are unremarkable but it makes some engaging commentary about religion and budo. I guessed who the traitor was using the least-likely paradigm. Not enough sword fights.

https://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFo...5#pid82894

It was 94 this afternoon. At least it was a dry heat, not that humidity that accompanied recent heat waves...I decided to duck out of the heat at the AMC Sunnyvale. I needed groceries so I could easily pop into Whole Foods after a flick.

TS5 was starting at 5pm, so I ordered a ticket online. Nearly empty theater, 1/2 off Tuesdays, plus I exercised my get off my lawn discount so it was a whopping $14. I didn't realize that this was the 3D experience, so that also included the spex.

I caught up on work messages and ignored most of the (not 3D) trailers as they were aimed at pre-teens. The Pixar promo for Gatto caught my eye tho (see https://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFo...o#pid85474). There was a 3D teaser for a new Ice Age installment...meh.

I don't remember much about Toy Story 4, (I took my mom to see that one when we went to Bozeman for my daughter's wedding 7 years ago) but I thought they had wrapped up the character arcs. This one begins focusing on Jessie with her new kid. The toy gang is all here, except for Woody. (The backstory from the previous films is filled in - he's semiretired with Little Bo-peep and the Canadian Evel Kinevel rescuing toys)

Jessie's current kid has a sad because the neighbor twins won't play with her. They spend most of their time with their faces stuck in screens. Her parents get her a Lilypad - a kid-gadget like the other kids have in hopes that she'll find/make friends. That doesn't work out.

Simultaneously, a shipping crate of high tech Buzz Lightyears washes up on a desert island. The Buzz's revive each other and try to get to Star Command. So the story goes back and forth between Jessie et al, and the Buzz hoard's progress.

It's amazing that they can make such a good movie for a 5th installment. It was sweet, funny, not as heavy-handed as I thought it was going to be (I knew it was an anti-tech treatise which is ironic coming from a digital production house always at the forefront of tech)

I have to add that I've see a few Real 3D films (Coraline being the last I remember) and in this one, the effect did not detract at all. I forgot I was wearing the glasses. I wouldn't recommend it, but I wouldn't not recommend it.

I laughed quite a few times. A worthy installment to the franchise.

Recommended if you want a kid friendly CGI story that isn't infantile.

It was hot, so I figured I'd hide out in an air conditioned theater after work until things cooled a bit.

This was a mind f*ck a movie. A thriller about inter-dimensional architecture. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a troubled furniture salesman, set in the 80's/90's. He's not unlike Ed Barbara of Furniture USA...in fact, it's set in Santa Clara Valley (though shot in BC) and mentions that the store is off McKee, near 680...Ejiofor talks with his therapist, but isn't making progress and is constantly focused on trying to keep the business going.

At one point, he discovers a portal to another part of the building. Hilarity ensues. It's very twisted and creepy and tries to have a lot of jump scares. A little Alice Through the Looking Glass, and maybe a little Tideland, but also Castaway as there are so few characters and much of the time is spent wandering around the maze...

You are in a maze of twisty little passages that are all different...you have been eaten by a grue!! There's definitely a video game feel to the movie, like Wolfenstein and other first person shooters.

I found the 80's furniture, decor, and fashion off-putting and it was hard to watch just that for an entire film, but even so, I think it was generally OK. I wanted more explanation than the few hints that were given.

Lightly recommended. No need to see on the big screen. Much of the beginning is being watched on an era-appropriate recording with scanlines.
This is surprisingly better than expected. Not that much was expected. Come on. It's He-Man. It's a lot like Mando, a roller coaster ride of effects and sword fights, with a lot of Easter eggs that might not make sense to the uninitiated. Rollicking action parsed by humor, some of which lands, some falls flat. But don't think about it. It falls apart as soon as you think about it. Honestly, if you're thinking about a movie based on a Saturday morning Filmation cartoon...

Teela steals the stage from Adam. Skeletor needed to be more whiny and it could've used more Cringer. Morena looks aged from the Sorceress, but carries the role with class. There's a great nod in a gym scene, and Fisto is played out well. The action is the funnest - lots of physics defying superhero fights. The ending is totally predictable, as are the end credit scenes which tease sequel ideas, all of which I am down for.

Hail Mary!

That was a bit of alright. I read the book. And it was the usual Andy Wier competency porn. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller pare it way down but still keep the heart of a really good hard sci-fi movie.

Grace is a scientist tasked with flying to Tau-Ceti in the hopes of finding out why this astrophage that is eating our sun is not destroying Tau-Ceti. Gosling does a really good job of playing astronaut grace bumbling towards the answer. There are numerous funny bits. There are numerous really tense action bits. And there are really sad bits. Even knowing a bunch of the twists going in did not lessen the impact of the movie. Sandra Hüller who plays Ezra Stratt as the no fucks to give head of the Hail Mary project does an astounding job.

Will see this again. Did I mention wears a 49er jersey?

Seen at AMC Sunnyvale. From the trailer, I was thinking this was going to be more Bonnie & Clyde, but I think it's a little more Sid & Nancy (from what I can remember of that film). Less action and more outsiders struggling with their identities (bride more than Frank) and their relationship.

The narrative is a bit scattered. It opens in b/w with a really tight closeup on Jesse Buckley as Mary Shelley explaining that she wrote Frankenstein on a a dare, but didn't get to tell the story she wanted to and is going to do that now (she's a little angry about that), but she's not sure how to do that and decides to possess someone...a party girl (Jesse Buckley) and it switches to color where Buckley becomes possessed and gets to show off her acting chops by switching between American party girl and angry Victorian British Mary Shelly mid-sentence.

The chemistry between Buckley and Christian Bale is good, but the story tries to be about her coming to terms with her identity while also throwing in a #MeToo movement, Moulin Rouge, and more of this than is needed...(I think it detracts from what directory Maggie Gyllenhaal is trying to say)

Jake Gyllenhaal is the singing/dancing star of the era and Frankie constantly goes to the movie theater to watch him dance.

It could have been better IMHO.

I went to Alamo in Mountain View for an early preview. I had high hopes going in, I really like Sam Rockwell...but I got there early enough to catch the Alamo pre-show reel which included an interview with the director talking about other movies that influenced this. He cited Dog Day Afternoon for act 1, some anime (Akira?) for act 2 and Repo Man for act 3. I didn't get that watching the film, but I did get that he was referencing other films constantly. This movie was all over the place. Mostly, it's a zombie movie and really badly wants to be a funny Black Mirror. It gets heavy handed with the messaging: mobile phones and AI are bad, but doesn't really get any deeper than that. There's a monologue bit near the end that was very conspicuous and didn't really need the rest of the movie.

It tries to be funny, the monster that appears in the trailer is like a bad, early, genAI dog images/videos with recursive heads in a fractal nightmare. They could have pulled that string harder for great effect...Generally I found it all a little flat.

It almost redeemed itself towards the end with an extra act. I'm not a Michael Peña fan. He always stands out as himself. I find it hard to take him as a character. I think the movie might have been better if they cast all unknowns with Sam Rockwell.

Wait for the small screen...
Paul Feig directed and Emma Thompson was one of the writers. Emilia Clarke stars as a young lady whose life is a mess. She came to England from Croatia with her parents when she was a young girl. This was sort of odd. Amusing but not laugh out loud, and it took a supernatural/magic realist turn, which would be a spoiler so I won't mention. A happy ending but not what you'd expect at the outset.
