Colin Farrell is Lord Doyle, a gambler in Macoa languishing in a pile of debt. He has days to pay off the debts or be sent to the police. Things don't look good for him settling his debt as he plays against a woman known as Grandma who sees through him and quickly cleans him out of his last bankroll. Lord Doyle meets a loan shark named Dao Ming who Lord Doyle thinks can help him.
Lord Doyle's descent plays against the festival of Hungry Ghosts currently happening in Macao. Lots of references are made to the ghosts who eat all they can but are never fulfilled.
The film is a slow paced downer following Lord Doyle and his interactions with Dao Ming. They spend a lot of time showing how bad Lord Doyle's life has become. Another twist is Tilda Swinton showing up, also there to collect on different debts.
The whole film is a bit of a slog. Lots of allegories and metaphors I probably didn't catch. You know things are bad when the film starts off with a suicide warning.
No sword fights.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
