Mdou Moctar at Felton Music Hall 12/4 - King Bob - 12-17-2025 I was waiting for TG to post this since he would no doubt have a more insightful take on it, but he hasn't, so I will. He's a Nigerian guitar player influenced by Tuareg musicians like Tinariwen and Bombino. And I guess you could add Ali Farka Toure since his style is one of the main roots of the Tuareg style. He played solo, mostly on an amplified acoustic guitar, sitting on a chair. During the second song, he asked the audience to clap the rhythm, which unfortunately led some of them to clap during every song, and those who did it for every song mostly couldn't keep the beat. He actually stopped during the next song and said "You have to clap with the tempo." I wished he'd had a percussionist to offset them. But nevertheless, he was good, and I enjoyed seeing how he played. It was not as fiery as his work with a band, but I think that was a plus - I find some of his band work to be a bit much. Here he is in a 2024 Tiny Desk Concert playing solo, using one of the guitars (toward the end) he played that night, although he has a band. Oddly a white guy bass player. |
