Lessons in Chemistry (2024 - Greg - 12-27-2023

The TV show. I watched the free episode. I'm now watching the pay episodes. The discrepancies from the book bug me because the book did things so well. But it is nice to see Brie Larson bring the characters to life. The replacement dog still bugs me. We might have to stop watching though because The Queen cried through pretty much the entire episode.

Ep03 The aftermath of the death and the birth. The TV show continues to go in a direction slightly away from the book and it bugs me. Yes, yes. I'm the old man cursing at the kids on his lawn. But the choices of the book are far superior to the choices made by the TV show. There are some good cringe worthy moments as the Patriarchy continues to be exposed for their foolishness. Far less crying in this episode.

We wrapped this up last night with two episodes. More crying from the queen. I'm going to make the outrageous statement and say I prefer the book. While TV show was good and effective, I think the choices made in the novel were much more interesting and better presented. The book was pretty white centric and the TV show decided to add some African American experiences to broaden the palette of the show. I'm not sure, if you hadn't read the book, if they seemed like weird appendages to the story or whether they fit right in.

The book had a lot of intricacies the TV show never explored or they explored the themes in a choppy fashion. This reviewer was left unsatisfied. The Queen really enjoyed the show.

I read the book after Greg mentioned it in the book count and have to agree that it's better. Some of the choices for the show seemed arbitrary, like changing the neighbor's backstory. Cutting back the dog's part was a loss. I enjoyed the character of the minister in the show, but it had more meat in the book. I saw the show first and did enjoy it, so if you're not going to read the book, I recommend it. Brie Larson is quite good.

Yes, I missed the dog bits.
