This comes with the intro by Cruise on the Biplane.

Gotta hand it to Tom. This is badass.

RE: Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Drunk Monk - 01-28-2024

So overblown. Such silliness. It’s too bad really because there’s some decent action and stunts. The car chase through Rome is fun despite its ridiculousness. It was nearly F&F level car stunts. The big bike parachute stunt actually looks better in the making of short than the movie. The train top right was cliche as was the blowing up of the bridge but the scramble to escape the falling train cars was amusing despite its total preposterousness.

Ving and Simon are on point. Tom just does Tom. I really liked Pom (not a typo) her part was the only character that had any soul and she was the villainess thug. Her story arc was the best part of this.

I did like the premise - an AI entity that’s borderland sentient and taking over every network in the world. That brings some interesting issues, a few were passingly explored, but there’s so much more that might be done with this. Perhaps in part 2.

I disdain the magic masks of MI. I’ve always thought that was weak. If it truly was the actor in makeup (like Mr. Big in Live and Let Die) it would work for me now.

Not D00M recommended -‘nevertheless I’ll watch part 2.

Seen on Amazon Prime

I really wish someone had told me how bad this was!

Actually, I knew full well what I was getting into. I just kind of wanted to see the insane stunts. I think the car chase in Rome was awesome and I loved the train wreck escape. I thought the motorcycle off the cliff was kind of dull and kind of chopped up. If you have one of the biggest stars in the world drive a motorcycle off a cliff, you should use one long take.

I did like Pom. Such a change from her role as Mantis in the Guardian films. I love that Henry Czerny has a had a thirty year career playing versions of the sleazy bureaucrat. You might remember him playing the same sort of role in Clear and Present Danger.

So much talking for an action film. There were at least three scenes of info dumps. Talk. Talk. Talk.

I felt like we just saw a film where the rogue AI runs the world using cutouts. Or maybe that's a book I just read (Grey Man series) Regardless, I'm tired of that plot. The Queen kept saying how dumb everything was in the film. Dumb and more dumb. And it ends on cliff hanger!

The masks signal to me that this is Mission Impossible. When the first film came out an there weren't masks, I eschewed that film for lack of masks. All Masks. All the time. And in this film, I really like the first use of the masks. It made up for the ten minute info dump scene that preceded it.

We are in Venice. Bad guy waits on the bridge. Why not just turn around and go somewhere else? He doesn't have anything you need. Walk away. Nope.

See this film for the car chase in Rome and the train scene.

I did label this as NOT D00M recommended.

The real question here is will you watch part 2? Oh you will. You know you will.

I long for the days of Barbara Bain & Martin Landau…

I keep meaning to revisit Space 1999 again. I watched an ep or two a few years back and was struck by how gothic it was.

RE: Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - thatguy - 09-03-2024

You know the Gerry Anderson super-marionation shows? Image actors trying to portray wooden puppets. It's better than U.F.O., but only by a smidge. I don't know how they landed Bain and Landau. The best bit is the opening theme music. I liked the Eagles spaceship, too. Seemed like a serious workhorse of a vehicle. I read that the model maker was so confident in his work that when he showed it off for the first time, he stood on top of it to show how sturdy it was...

What are you talking about? UFO was great! Or so I remember. Maybe I was just distracted by the blue haired hotties.

That's Nick Drake's sister you're talking about! And their hair was purple (when they were on duty at moonbase, but not when they were in the secret offices on Earth. Cmdr Straker was the most wooden character ever.

I need you to trust me
One last time

I'm sure it will be awful.

I'm sure I will watch it at some point.

Plus, more exotic Tom Cruise running footage.
