Pennyworth - thatguy - 10-08-2022 The origin story of Alfred - Batman's butler. I watched episode one and enjoyed it very much. So British, like Dr Who or Connery's James Bond. I didn't realize it's been out for some time and is in season 3 now. Recommended... -tg RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 10-09-2022 Ah, a recommendation. I've been curious, but not curious enough. RE: Pennyworth - thatguy - 10-09-2022 Caveat: I've only watched the first episode Tip: I had to turn on the captions to understand the slang and the Scotsman. RE: Pennyworth - Drunk Monk - 10-09-2022 They need to do a show based on Aunt Harriet. There could be all this action happening in the peripheries while Aunt Harriet remains clueless... RE: Pennyworth - thatguy - 10-10-2022 Update: I think we're mid-season 1 now. It's more and more evident that this is some alt-history universe as there are elements from various decades, but it's really hard to pin down "when" the present actually is. Alfred is a young man, free after having done 10 years in the SAS. There are dirigibles in the dark London sky, talk of color TV, Black Sabbath covers playing in the titty bar, comments in the telly broadcast about Scandinavians and The Reich. There are two warring factions trying to take control of England: The Ravens and The No-Name League. Dark times...getting darker. The show takes a real dark, tho not unexpected turn. Now we have to see how Alfred rises. --tg RE: Pennyworth - thatguy - 10-21-2022 Finished season one. That was quite a romp. Alfred is like 007...suave, flawed, good hearted, tamping down some inner darkness. The show takes a lot of twists (Alister Crowley is in one episode), is very Brit, and has some really funny moments in spite of the darkness: The Scotsman, the queen's portrait, the Sykes sisters. Still recommended... --tg RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 10-23-2022 Caught Ep01. I am on board. I loved the white haired female hench woman. Lots of great storylines and threads in that weird alternate 1906s (maybe) London. The gibbets and stocks are especially telling. RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 10-24-2022 I binged. I got all the way to Ep05. I really like show. So much is going on. Lots of fun Easter Eggs floating around if you are familiar with the canon. But it doesn't matter if you are. The characters are all really good. Such a dark world Alfred lives in. Lots of good British slang to keep you on your toes. Two really great unexpected deaths so far that are brutal in their execution. Because of the way the show is going I'm led to question the fact that Bruce Wayne has an Aunt and a Grandmother in this universe. I'm so excited there are three seasons of this show. I hope they keep up the quality. RE: Pennyworth - thatguy - 10-24-2022 Season 2 skips ahead from the season 1 finale. More darky darkness. The writing does feel like it's taken a shift. We'll see how this season measures up. --tg RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 10-25-2022 Ep06 Well that was a weird sideways step into the occult with Aleister Crowley and Pennyworth meeting the prison witch. The episode seemed to have a different tone than the others and we finally get a lead on Pennyworth's nemesis. Maybe. I'm not buying it. RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 10-26-2022 Ep07 Okay. Less Wayne. More Pennyworth. His is the only story I care about and this one was all about Thomas Wayne getting his sister back from Aleister Crowley. The energy level of the show seems to have settled a bit. RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 10-29-2022 Ep08 and Ep 09. It's kind of limping to the finish line. The show needs more Pennyworth in it. Although there was a really fun stand off and I did like Pennyworth in Newgate. But those scenes had Pennywoth in them. The whole battle for Britain is kind of leaving me cold. I'll watch the finale tonight and see how they wrap up this season. RE: Pennyworth - Greg - 11-04-2022 I'm on to Season 2. Things are really out of hand. The fascists control much of the country. London is still ruled by the British government. Alfred is still dealing with the end of season 1. I've watched two more episodes. Still not enough Pennyworth. He's the most compelling character and he is usually in the opening and the closing then we are off to Thomas Wayne and the head of the Ravens and Beth and her sister. Alfred's main goal is to get enough money and get to America but that is proving problematic. All his schemes seem to lead him down a darker path. Yet, he keeps going, trying to keep to his code but that is proving difficult. RE: Pennyworth - thatguy - 11-06-2022 Season 2 in the bag...the story sends and weaves all about and you wonder if it will find its feet, but it does. You can feel the tone shift from episode to episode which I think is due to different directors, but it does all fit together somehow. So many great bits of dialog. Daveboy is hilarious. Lots of little twists, some you might expect, some not. Still recommended. --tg PS: here's the official season 2 trailer RE: Pennyworth - thatguy - 11-06-2022 Slight spoiler: Season 2 ended with a somewhat cartoony note. Bring based on a graphic novel/comic, I give it a pass, but it was a shift in tone from the rest of the episodes. Now some backstory: Season 1/2 were a DC/Epix network venture. I understand they had to shut down production on Season 3 due to Covid. Season 3 is an HBO/Max production. I don't know what the impact of all that is, but I can say that Season 3 opens with a recap of the story up to now, narrated by Alfie. It's a bit chummy and comic-y, too...I'm not sure that I like it. Season 3 jumps 5 years ahead into a groovy summer of love post-civil war world. Daveboy still has great lines, and the boys still have a security business, but we'll have to see if this season finds a path forward... --tg |
