A Letter to Momo (2012) - Drunk Monk - 10-10-2020

I'm still in the Yokai world for Halloween. It feels like the best place for me to be right now.

I've had this in my queue for years, but I'm hesitant to watch anime sometimes. I don't know why. This one is simply opulent. The backgrounds are painstakingly detailed illustrations of life on a Japanese island, meticulous in their authenticity, so much so you can see what brand of bottled tea they are drinking.

It's a father-daughter tale, and you know what a softie I am for those. Only here, the father is dead. The mother and daughter relocate to the island, the mom's old home, and there are three yokai living in the attic that only the daughter can see. It was funny, and almost unbearably poignant. The mother and daughter coping with their grief, struggling to maintain face while struggling with so many emotions. It's layered and beautiful, not just in its story but in its art which is so convincingly expressed that I kept losing track that it was anime and not live action. I got all misty a few times towards the end as the story came to its emotional resolutions.

No sword fights but yokai farts. Recommended for DOOM anime fans.
