Bishonen (1998) - Drunk Monk - 10-07-2020

I've been wanting to see this film for years. It's Daniel Wu's first film. He never intended to be an actor. He was discovered, first for a modelling ad, and consequently for this film.

This is about Hong Kong gay love. Stephen Fung is a gay gigalo. His future wife, Shu Qi, is an antiques dealer who cross dresses at gay clubs and is Daniel's beard. Daniel is a cop, but a closeted gay, who had a rough first gay relatioship when he cheated on him with a soon-to-be star. On one hand, it's rough. The gay scenes are brutal. Seeing Stephan be groped by old men is gross. On another hand, it's sappily romantic as Stephen finds love and redemption with Daniel. It was a strange film in that I can't say I understood it. It showed Hong Kong well - it was the year after it turned over from being a Brit colony, back to PRC, so it was daring artistically in the face of PRC censorship.

Both Stephen and Daniel delivered solid perfomances. And they were both beautiful at that age (bishonen means 'beautiful boy'). I'm glad to have seen it finally because it fills in a gap for me about Daniel. I've always implied that I've seen it already in our conversations. We discussed it at length for that Den of Geek video interview but they only used a few minutes of an in depth 50 min interview, which kinda bummed me out.

No sword fights. The sex is all off scene, just implied. Not DOOM recommended.

Daniel impressed me as an actor, back in Europa Report and in the scene in Badlands when his love interest dies. He’s the real deal.
