Stephen Chow's next - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 10-20-2006

This just in from some paper in Canada: Stephen Chow is doing an alien picture. So much for Kung Hustle or Shaolin Soccer 2

Shaolin Soccer's Stephen Chow to start filming alien movie in China in July

Quote:HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow of Shaolin Soccer fame will reportedly start filming a new movie in July with an alien theme that is budgeted at more than 100 million Chinese yuan (about $14 million Cdn).

In the film, which will be shot in the eastern Chinese port of Ningbo, Chow plays an astronaut who accidentally lands on a foreign planet and befriends a group of young aliens, the Dushi Kuaibao newspaper reported, quoting Chow's assistant.

The plot also involves a romance with a female robot, played by newcomer Zhang Yuyi, the report said.

Chow is known for his comedies such as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle.

Kato? - Drunk Monk - 07-24-2007

July 21, 2007

The Los Angeles Times, which broke the news about Seth Rogen writing and starring in The Green Hornet, is now saying the Knocked Up star wants Kung Fu Hustle director and actor Stephen Chow to play Kato in his comedic take on the comic book.

The "Green Hornet" TV show was notable for the presence of the late Bruce Lee as sidekick Kato, a kung fu expert with a killer car.

Rogen would play Brit Reid, millionaire publisher-turned-masked crime fighter. The film will be produced by Neal H. Moritz at Columbia Pictures.

A HOPE - Drunk Monk - 09-27-2007

Quote:A Hope" Sets Screening Date Finally
2007-09-26 13:40:42 CRIENGLISH.com

Hong Kong actor-turned-director Stephen Chow's latest fantasy film "A Hope" finally set its screening date on January 31 of next year.

Film investor, the China Film Group Corporation, announced the decision, according to The Beijing News report. Agent of the comedy star says that Stephen Chow is still busy editing the film, which he has been working on for about a year.

He explains that fantasy film is a new field for Chow and he has to put in a lot of time on the post-editing. The emphasis of the director's work is the stunts, according to the publicist, however, the selling point of the film is the story itself, as story-telling is just Chow's forte.

Just as in his other films, Stephen Chow plays a small potato in this film. The poor father, stared by Chow, has a son whom he loves deeply. And they meet a kindly teacher, who is actually an alien.

Shooting of the film was concluded last year and it was once scheduled to be put on screen during this summer vacation.

Shaolin Soccer Sequel - Drunk Monk - 10-17-2007

Produced by Stephan Chow in Japan, but he won't be in it. This should be better than Shaolin Family Soccer, which starred the guy who played Iron Head in Shaolin Soccer, but was completely unconnected with Chow. Of course, being better than that isn't saying much.

Quote:Stephen Chow to Direct Remake of 'The Karate Kid

Hollywood star Will Smith met actor-filmmaker Stephen Chow Friday in Hong Kong, where he attended the Asian premiere of the sci-fi thriller "I am Legend," and invited him to produce, direct and star in the remake of the hit 1984 martial arts movie "The Karate Kid."

Reports say Smith selected Chow because he likes the innovative actions in Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle," as well as his latest film "CJ7," which Smith had seen a rough cut edition at Sony Pictures Classics.

Chow told the media, "I'm very fond of 'The Karate Kid' and would love to join in the remake project, no matter as a producer, director or actor. But it depends on my schedule. As you know, next year I will work on two movies, 'Dragon Ball' and 'Journey to the West.'"

Will Smith hopes to shoot the movie in China.

CJ7 - Drunk Monk - 03-12-2008

Yeah, I saw it. So did CF and LCF so they say. CF was waiting graciously to give me dibs on first review, but I'm way busy right now. So I'm just going to give it a thumbs up right now and hope the CFs follow through with a more complete review. I'll have something more to say once I figure a way to say it with out too many spoilers...

re: CJ7 - cranefly - 03-12-2008

You know, we're tubes. Human beings are basically just tubes. Well, we're not quite that simple. We have noses, ears, eyes, and a couple routes out the bottom. This gives us a certain amount of sophistication -- especially when you consider that each of these egresses holds the possibility for leakage.

Now, in the wrong hands, leakage can be disgusting. In the proper hands, it can be funny. In Stephen Chow's hands, it is almost guaranteed to be disgusting, funny and perverse. He'll put together scenes you just wouldn't expect to see in cinema. For instance, you wouldn't expect a toilet seat to play a recurring role in a movie. But he does it. And eventually you start looking forward to that toilet seat.

I'm trying very hard not to give anything away; thus all this vague talk about leakage. What I will say is that Lady Cranefly and myself laughed out loud on several occasions, as well as let out some horrific gasps at some taboo sights.

In summary, the movie was about what I had hoped for. I couldn't imagine it being brilliant, and it's not. It owes heavily to ET (which Chow credits in interviews as a masterpiece). But it is all over the map, in its pacing, in the tone, in the direction, in just about everything. Some of the humor is so Chinese that it's a stretch for me to imagine anyone laughing at it. For instance, there's the big school girl who's probably 6'8" and over 400 pounds -- and clearly played by a huge guy. With all the makeup and the tiny girl voice, he/she just seems ... disturbing. Oddly enough, the boy protagonist is played brilliantly by a girl (Chow did something like 15000 screen tests before discovering her). As for the alien, it mostly won me over -- though its absurdist elements could turn a lot of people off.

From what I understand, this movie was 4 years in the making. That is very troubling. it is troubling because this seems like a minor movie for Chow. Still, he had to figure out a lot of things to tackle this new genre (science fiction). But I really want Chow to pick up the pace, be more prolific. Because the Stephen Chows of this world are few and far between.

A final comment about target audience. Who is this movie for? I mean, here in the States it is subtitled -- which puts it out of reach of many young kids. While it does have entertainment value for adults, I don't know.... I just don't see it doing well outside of Hong Kong.

I hope I'm wrong.
