Downton Abbey - Drunk Monk - 09-22-2019 Wot? No thread on one of my favorite shows? How decidedly common. I was invited to a screener and even interviews with a few select cast members but I just could not figure a Kung Fu connection for the review. There were some presentation swords in the movie, and kind of a fight scene, but still - this one got away. It's okay. Frankly few TV shows have succeeded in making the jump to the big screen. I can only think of ST: TMP off the top of my head, but that launched a massive franchise. It was delightful to see my fav characters again, to check in on them, and there are plenty of grand sweeping drone shots to make Downton appear more cinematic, but in the end, it just feels like a long episode - two episodes back-to-back - as Fellows struggles to pack in story arcs for all the beloved characters in a tight two hours. I would've rather seen this on PBS as a follow-up special, like Rescue from Gilligan's Island. Needed more Mr. Bates and less Branson & Barrows. Additional HP+1 with Umbridge. And extra points for the actress from Sense8. RE: Downton Abbey - Drunk Monk - 09-23-2019 Topped the Box, beating out Brad Pitt in Ad Astra and Rambo. I am strangely pleased to have contributed to that cinematic upset. Twice the projected take. Bravo! A friend of mine went to an activation in L.A. and sent me an extra bit of schwag he got - a Downton Abbey deck of cards. It's cute but it would've been much cuter if the royal suites were characters from the show - Lady Mary as the Queen of Hearts, Mr. Bates as the Jack of Clubs, that sort of thing. We just finished rewatching the series. Christina told me the other day that Hugh Bonneville and I are the same age. I thought at first "I look younger than him" but then decided I was probably deluded. RE: Downton Abbey - Drunk Monk - 02-15-2022 I'd say younger than him but that's based on the last time I saw you in the flesh and it's been a few years. When was the last time? And I know with me, the pandemic aged me like another decade plus. Hugh is a much better dresser tho... you'll never match his dapperness. RE: Downton Abbey - King Bob - 02-15-2022 And I don't have that posh accent. RE: Downton Abbey - Drunk Monk - 10-28-2022 Downton Abbey: A New Era Just appeared on Amazon Prime. We were amused at first seeing how the actors have aged (Bonville lost weight and is tanned). It was feeling a bit forced - so many characters, and refamiliarizing ourselves with who was who was a bit challenging. The cinematic version just felt a bit overdone. Stacy went to bed (she was up early today and did a big hike). I watched on. As soon as Stacy bailed, it found its stride and I was struck by how many times it gave me the feels. These characters, this cast, there’s some depth and range here. It was playing to the fans with several scenes, and bordered on ridiculous given how much they tried to pack in, but it worked for me in the end, even though I guessed the inevitable final arc. Still charming. I’m still invested. D00M recommended for the Downton fans here. RE: Downton Abbey - Drunk Monk - 06-02-2025 This trailer gave me the feels...
