The Favourite - Drunk Monk - 12-23-2018 More women in power in ancient times. It’s Rachel Weitz v Emma Stone as maids to the afflicted Queen Anne as she suffers gout, a stroke and possible dementia. More intense sexual politics. No swordfights tho. This is lighter than Mary QoS, with some scenes played for laughs and more manipulative cattiness. Cunnilingus plays a major role in both films, as does rape. Again, some great performances that could get Oscar nods. Some amusingly surreal scenes about the excesses of royal court. We were all amused but after just binging Maniac I’ve had enough Emma (there’s even a comment here about her gigantic peepers). RE: The Favorite - cranefly - 12-23-2018 I reviewed Yorgo's previous effort, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, here: http://brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4631 In that review, I finished with this comment: Quote:Maybe I'm developing a taste for Yorgos. Or maybe he's improving in ways I can appreciate. His upcoming The Favourite, an Elizabethan sex comedy, looks genuinely promising.I'll definitely put it on my post-Peru list. BTW, it's spelled Favourite, proofreadingly speaking. Effin' Brits. RE: The Favourite - Drunk Monk - 12-23-2018 Thanks for the copy editing there. And the reference. I went for Emma but Olivia as the queen stole the show really. RE: The Favourite - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2019 Called it. Although I only thot it’d get nods. RE: The Favourite - Greg - 03-10-2019 Um, no. 12 hours spent with horrible people isn't my idea of good entertainment. It was 12 hours long, wasn't it? There was a lot of odd camera work. When you do pans, like Yorgos does, with a wide angle lens, it distorts the frame immensely. In small doses it could be trippy, but I think he overplayed his hand because he liked the look of it. I think the whole film had a really good look at court. The costumes and set dressing were really well and differently done. I don't think I can name a film of this period that did such a good job of depicting court. I don't know if it's accurate or not, but it did shoot well. But, no. I was bored. I was also tired and that might not have helped. |
