I think there's at least one other space exploration aficionado on here, so here goes.
SpaceX will be launching the TESS mission the middle of April. This is big. Bigger than big.
The following link is an excellent presentation by SETI of just how significant TESS will be. The science -- and heavy reliance on AI -- is fascinating.
If you want to skip the intros and cut to the chase, start at 6 minutes in.
TESS scheduled to launch Monday, 4/16/2018, at 3:32 pm PST - cranefly - 04-15-2018
In this harrowing age of MAGS (Mutually Assured Golden Showers), it's always nice to see something a bit more on the constructive side, such as a spaceship launch, especially when it's not just putting up another spy satellite or military deathray (like yesterday's launch).
Tomorrow (Monday), if all goes well, the TESS exoplanet hunter will launch on a Falcon 9 at 3:32 pm our time.
This will be a very complicated launch, in the sense that TESS must be put in a highly eccentric elliptical orbit that goes out to a lunar distance and then comes in close to earth. Further, it's a polar orbit (passing over the poles). Further, each polar orbit will shift, and in doing so look at a different slice of the sky.
I'm very much looking forward to this, and hope to hell that TESLA's winning streak holds tomorrow.
There will be various live feeds. The ones handled by SPACEX staff are the best, while the NASA live feed can be rather stodgy. Not certain which flavor the following link is, but it's all I can find for now.
