Pain and Gain (2013) - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 10-07-2013

I'm always hoping to see the character that Mark Wahlberg brought to the screen in 'The Departed' I'm going to say that was one of the few times that I really enjoyed something he did. He can be okay as he was in 'The Fighter' or he can be dreadful as he was in 'Planet of the Apes'

In 'Pain and Gain' you got something in between 'The Fighter' and 'PotA'. Pain and Gain is the story of some dim bulb body builders in Florida who hatch a plan to steal one of their clients fortunes. Walhberg enlists the aid of recently released con Duane 'The Rock' Johnson and erectile dysfunction sufferer Anthony Mackie. Tony Shaloub plays the victim.

Michael Bay has all his subtlety of depiction all over this film. He hits every beat with a sledge hammer. It was supposed to be a comedy but there wasn't a funny bit in the film. I think he was trying to capture the magic he had with Bad Boys. but Bad Boys had at least comedic actors in it. Despite the success of 'Ted' you really can't say Wahlberg brings the funny.

Then there is 'The Rock' He is best thing by far in this movie. He plays dumb really well. He is man struggling with his demons addiction and to watch his transformation from AA participant back to raging alcoholic and coke head was really well done. The only thing about the film that I really enjoyed was his portrayal.

Never title a film that lends itself for really bad reviews. This film was mostly Pain with no Gain. See?
