Good to see Cake is still performing. And I thought Kings of Leon had imploded?

No Furthur - Drunk Monk - 05-01-2013

Furthur pulled out of BottleRock because Bobby is ill. BottleRock is next week and I was headed up to Napa for it on Thur/Fri, just because I needed a little campout break, but it's looking crazy. No camping save for some alleged special site for RM. They expect 35K attendees and only have 5K hotel rooms. It's been nicknamed BottleNeck. I'll probably still go, just because I can. I've already got the days off and T will be away on her school camping trip. I want to see this new fest.

Bottle Rock Night #1 - Drunk Monk - 05-12-2013

I bailed work early, hoping to get ahead of traffic. Total fail. Took me hours to get there. RM was camped at Skyline, a pleasant private campground that did Boy Scout events. I only planned to stay through Sat morn, but also failed at camp prep for three nights as my stuff was pretty shuffled from the move. Forgot tent stakes and a flashlight. Fortunately, I borrowed some. There was allegedly some sort of shuttle as much of staff was camped at Skyline, but I always managed to hitch a ride w/RM.

The venue is small with private homes right across the street. It was nice in that it was only a short stroll from one place to another. The days were warm and breezy. The nights were cold and windy. There were 3 major stages, one minor stage and an indoor stage for live comedy, a Whole Food presented eating area, and a lot of wine booths including a show special: wine pouches of Reverb Red and White Noise (neither sounded appealing). I only drank one glass of wine, a nice local cab from one of the vols who was a member of that winery. He told me all about it, but I wasn't really listening. RM had a tremendous beer cache (Anchor, Anchor CA lager, Stella, Shocktop) and not many beer drinkers so I stepped up to cover for those not drinking.

Night one was 5K attendees for Mackelmore. He was better than I had expected, but once his 3 hits were done, then what? At least I got to text T and brag as her whole class is into him.

Stayed up until 2:30 AM partying at the RM camp. That was a mistake, as it was a useless waste of time really, but some eager nooBs were eager to hear war stories.

More to come...

Bottle Rock Day #2 - Drunk Monk - 05-12-2013

The first act I caught was the Silverado Pickups. I had misread the ads and thought it was supposed to be the Silversun Pickups. The Silverado Pickups opened with a cover of the Monkees, which was very disappointing on all counts.

There was this crazy drama with a local oldtimer vol claiming to be psych. I know her (not well) and she was bitching about what a hassle it was getting in and hour it took hours and whine whine Napa wine. First off, the crack psych team aka Jedi Nite Krew, takes it's name from that scene in Star Wars where Obi Wan jedis past the stormtroopers with his 'not the droids you're looking for' schtick. All the true psych JNK breezed into the venue because it was new and no one knew wtf was going on. If she couldn't get into this new show in her own town, there's no way she could be on psych crew. The show managers understood (they had all caught her whine) but they saddled me with her anyway. I quickly dumped her into the annex and abandoned her there.

The Refusers sounds liked any other band. They did a really crappy reggae song, so I refused them.

Delta Spirit also sounded like any other band, so much so that it bugged me because I couldn't put my finger on which other band they sounded like exactly. And then, it turned out that the band wasn't Delta Spirit. It was Iron 'something'. The switched up the schedule for that stage because they moved that stage's headliner (Avert Bros) to the main stage where Furthur would have performed. There were all these rumors that BottleRock had got Prince to fill that slot but in the end, they just let it drop. There was a huge kerfuffle between BottleRock and Furthur, so much so that Phil through Turtle Rock at Terrapin Crossroads (his club) in protest.

ALO was okay. Didn't to to listen to enough to form an opinion.

Joan Jett still gotz it. I was looking forward to her set most of all, and it was interrupted immediately by a tripper that I had to takedown and take in. It happened right in front of Napa PD, and they were good enough to take a hands-off position and just observe. They were impressed with us. On a side note, there was a tremendous police presence. There were even undercover cops, but they were easy to spot because they had a drug dog with one of those little doggy jackets emblazoned with K-9 on it. Note to undercover cops: when you go undercover, your dog must be undercover too. But back to Joan, I got back out and caught the very end of her set. She's still solid, still has that voice like a punch in the gut, still cool in the blazing hot sun, stalking the stage like a cougar with a guitar, rocking a black spandex cat suit at 54 and just being the timeless rock goddess that she is.

After the tripper, I was in the RM karma zone where everything was going my way.

I caught my fav Black Crowes song, She talks to Angels. The vocals seemed a little off but they added a mandolin which brought a fresh bittersweetness to the tune.

As for Primus - Primus sucks.

I missed X. Poor timing on my part but it was a small crew and I do have to work sometimes.

I caught my fav Violent Femmes song, Why Can't I Get. They sounded great, more mature than I remember them, but perhaps that is the benefit of time. It was getting windy and cold, and very drunk, but their crowd was dancing uncontrollably which is a good way to stay warm and work off the intoxication.

Rm was distributing a new electrolyte drink called Squinch. Isn't squinch when you fail to apparate right in Harry Potter? It wasn't as sweat tasting as Gatorade. It was more like a cheap lemon lollipop.

The crowd was older, well-dressed and clean. They were also pretty snobby and felt overly entitled. The tickets were expensive and that shut out a lot of riff raff. The even-more-expensive VIP tix granted special access to these corrals with bars, tables and barstools and nicer portable toilets, the kind that come in trailers. Not sure if that was really worth it. The VIP lammy holders kept asking "where is the VIP tent?" to which I cheerfully replied "There are no tents. There are corrals."

more to come.

Ah, Squinch - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-12-2013

Squinch was very popular on assorted construction crews. It comes in a variety of flavors you can mix yourself from lovely silver packets.

Here I post all these music comments... - Drunk Monk - 05-14-2013

...and all you come back with is Squinch? Fine. No more music for this post. I still have one more day to report and that's where all the music really happens.

As it turns out, Squinch is much cheaper than gatorade so RM has made the conversion.

Instead of music, let's talk about what dm does to get into these shows - wrassles with trippers. OK, first off, dm is not supposed to divulge what happens in RM because of HIPPA, so this, along with so many other Dm rants here, is for DOOM EYES ONLY.

There were two restraints where dm could show his stuff. The first, already mentioned, cut into his enjoyment of Joan Jett. He was a young street dread who went by Cos (short for Cosmic Charlie). He was dirty and topless. A old friend from the staff food service came and got dm specifically, and when dm got there security had him pinned in the dirt with their knees on his head. The cops came, along with a lot of looky-loos, and it was right on stage right audience, in front of Joan. One of the old BGP guys, an old friend, jumped in and another RM vol, big Jeff, arrived and the three took over, picked up the ipr and walked/carried him into RM. it wasn't far. He was put in restraint for a while. He was a stream of profanity. Hit him with a cocktail of ativan & bendryl (no haldol available). He came down nicely and when he managed to urinate in the porta potty with only a little assistance, it was time to get rid of him. He was baseline schizophrenic, but there wasn't anything more we could do for him but give him some tripper clothes, a medical shirt from some other company and an ill-fitting jacket.

The other one was a belligerent drunk. Dm was called out of dinner (fortunately he had just finished) to find total chaos in the space tent. One half restrained woman and another screeching female friend. Dm wanted to digest his dinner and not think too hard, so he immediately pinned down the restraint and told the whitebirder (who seemed slightly put off saying 'i was just about to do that' to which dm replied 'too late') to remove the other gal as she was exacerbating the situation. the restrianee was a fighter and another whitebirder kept talking to her, so she kept fighting. dm told him to shut up. dm loves those whitebirders, but they can be a little too soft sometimes and this called for tough love. Turned out she was just going thru a divorce and a boob job, and when mixed with alcohol, such was the result. She was very sexual (boob job side effect) and took off her panties a few times, saying 'pinch me, bite me, spank me, cock me'. She got a shot too and when she was swabbed just prior, she shouted 'who's licking my ass? i need someone to lick my ass!' She eventually calmed down and released to friends.

Next time - day 3: Alabama Shakes & Black Keys. 8)

Poor DM - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-14-2013

Came down from the mountain with the tablets and all we can talk about are his sandals.

Joan Jett was one of my first concerts. Saw her from the fourth row back in 1982 in Santa Barbara in a very small venue. The guy in front of me was ready to climb up on stage and have his way with JJ.

The Black Crowes are still together. I never really liked them and thought them highly over rated. Probably had nothing to do with the fact they were in heavy rotation on my rock radio back in the day. Although, of all their songs, I did like 'Talk to Angels' best.

Better? Happy?

But Winona did have a big brown beaver. . . .

they are cool sandals, aren't they? - Drunk Monk - 05-15-2013

Well alright then. Bottlerock, day 3, which is the most entertaining day, at least musically speaking as I've already shared the boob-job-ass-licker tale which occured during day 3.

The first band was They went Ghost. They had a red, green & gold banner and did some white reggae, played like rock, which was almost satisfying as it was the closest thing to reggae for this whole show.

Then I caught Vintage Trouble, who were dressed up in riverboat vests and ties. There were soulful and groovy and got good response with their 'make some noise'. Lots of dancing wimmin which is always a good sign that something is going on musically.

Then there was Alabama Shakes. I walked in just as she started in on her big hit, Hold on. Damn, what a voice. Amazing. Such soul. I might have a new diva to worship - the antidote to glam divas. She sings with this raw authenticity and has a huge mouth. She really only has one guitar trick, rapid chord strumming, but she does it well. Very satisfying, so much so, I was getting misty as I haven't been moved by music in a while. I seriously thought I lost some of my hearing range recently, but she restored my faith in the power of great music.

Flaming Lips were the only group I saw to decorate their stage. They had this crazy array of light cable tentacles sprawled from the mike over a clutch of chrome alien eggs climbing like ivy up the backstage tv screen. It was actually toned down from their usual theatrics, but big for bottlerock. I've seen Lips before but I don't really know their songlist and was told by a doc friend who is a big fan that it was mostly new stuff.

The last act was Black Keys, but prior to them was some burlesque show. I saw the burlesque gals earlier, typical sexy skanky extrovert types - the day before they had a table next to the official bottlerock merch booth where they took pictures for donations. Two guys in a row stripped down to their tighty-whiteys for the shot. Those dudes had great bods and I would have done likewise if I had a bod like that. But they didn't show to open for the Keys. Meanwhile, my partner-in-crime, Capt hardy, who I had pawned off my radio and delegated as head-o-psych, was trying to sneak backstage. So there was this awkward 'should we? shouldn't we?' moment. Mind you, I was out of completely uniform, looking very casual, when up steps an old friend couple who had backstage passes because he manages a hotel that the Keys were staying at. "going up?" they ask. "why yes, yes I am" replies Dm. So dm got to see the entire Black Keys set from the stage left balcony. This was the first time I saw them live. Wow. A two-piece. Gotta respect that. They had a keyboard and additional guitar for some of the songs, but I could barely hear them. That drummer Carney is an orangutan, beating out rhythms like some mad alpha male. And the Auerbach can wail on guitar and vocals. Good stuff. A very satisfying way to end Friday night (my final music act for BottleRock as I left Sat morn). Late Sat nite, I got a text from Capt Hardy saying he got busted for being backstage by RM supervisors. I just had to laugh at that.

I enjoyed BottleRock immensely. I hope to work it again next year. It's too rich for my blood to buy tix.

wait...what? - Drunk Monk - 01-22-2014

I thought this was done when BR failed to pay everyone (including the sheriff).

The Napa Valley Expo announced at its board meeting on Tuesday that it has negotiated a contract for the return of the BottleRock music festival in 2014.

The contract has been sent to the festival’s intended producers, GSF Entertainment LLC, also known as Latitude 38 Entertainment. June 20-22 festival dates have been proposed.

The GSF team received the contract Tuesday morning and is reviewing it, said spokeswoman Tara Murphy. To further that commitment, the group has also given a certified check to the Expo for the full $310,938 it is owed for the 2013 festival.

New sponsors are trying to resuscitate the five-day music festival that was held this past May at the downtown Expo. A music success, with such major artists as Train, the Black Crowes, Joan Jett, Jane's Addiction, Kings of Leon and the Black Keys appearing on multiple stages, the festival ended with a mountain of debt, including unpaid invoices and lawsuits for breach of contract.

Key members of GSF include Napa entrepreneurs David Graham, Jason Scoggins, Joe Fischer and Justin Dragoo.

Fischer is known for his work with Copia and the Gasser Foundation in Napa. Scoggins is the co-founder of Jumpstart Automotive Media. Graham’s experience includes building, operating and investing in technology and e-commerce companies, according to one biography. Dragoo is president of Gargiulo Vineyards in Napa.

According to a letter from GSF Entertainment, the group executed an asset purchase agreement on Jan. 17 that will transfer “certain festival production and brand assets” from BR Festivals to GSF. Confirmation of the agreement was signed by Graham and Gabe Meyers, “manager” of BR Festivals, LLC.

However, Bog Vogt, another BottleRock co-founder, disputed that agreement. In an email received by the board hours before it met on Tuesday afternoon, Vogt wrote that Meyers and BR Festivals attorney Matt Eisenberg have “sought to circumvent” requirements regarding approval of any sale of BR’s assets.

A sale of such assets cannot be complete without his consent, which he has not given, Vogt wrote.

In December, Vogt said he had voluntarily resigned as manager of BottleRock but he remains a manager of WillPower Entertainment, LLC. Willpower Entertainment, founded by Vogt, was a partner in BottleRock.

According to Vogt, BR Festivals requires approval from WillPower management to sell BottleRock assets.

He asked the board to defer a lease until he and Graham could resolve their issues.

After Tuesday’s board meeting, Expo CEO Joe Anderson said that any dispute over BottleRock assets is between Vogt, Meyers and GSF. “We’re moving forward” with a contract with GSF, he said.

“We are very pleased at how all of this is progressing,” said Graham. Once the contract is executed, “we will be able to discuss, in more detail, plans for the 2014 festival.”

Graham declined to say when GSF would sign the Expo contract. He also declined to discuss which vendors would be paid for 2013 expenses or how a possible bankruptcy filing from BR Festivals would impact plans. More than $5.5 million in debt has been publicly disclosed.

One of those vendors is Gary Bauer, president/CEO at Bauer’s Intelligent Transportation. The bus company is owed $524,239 for services at BottleRock 2013.

Bauer attended the Expo board meeting on Tuesday.

“We just want to be compensated,” Bauer said. “I don’t care who does it.” Bauer said he was in discussions with GSF to provide transportation for BottleRock 2014.

In October, Anderson said the Expo board would not approve a contract “until we know everybody will get paid.” On Tuesday, in a phone interview, Anderson said GSF has told the Expo they intend to pay vendors, “but we can’t require it as an element of the contract” with the Expo.

In November, Graham said that the Expo would be paid 100 percent of what it is owed and other vendors would be paid between 50 and 90 percent of amounts due. On Tuesday, Graham said he could not elaborate further until the contract was signed.

Jim Beaumonte, president of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 16, said Tuesday afternoon that his members “have an agreement to work with Latitude 38 on BottleRock 2014.”

“We’re ready to get back to work,” Beaumonte said.

According to a lawsuit filed by IATSE, $630,000 in wages and benefits were left unpaid after the 2013 event. When asked if those members would be paid for that work, Beaumonte declined to comment.

BottleRock will be held June 20 to 22, Graham said in November.

bailed - Drunk Monk - 06-02-2015

T and I had it all set up to go up Sat afternoon, work RM, camp, then work RM Sunday morn, and be off for the evening acts. But she was sick (and frankly I was relieved because I still haven't really caught up from TCEC&KFTCD). Reports from my RM & fest-working friends were all positive. I guess they pulled off a third one successfully.

Maybe next year.

Stevie is one of the Bottlerock headliners

I don't do Bottlerock anymore because it conflicts with Cali Roots.

BottleRock rescheduled for October 2nd – 4th, 2020.  So maybe...

October is going to be lit! Off the hook? Dyn-o-mite?
