Stan Schroeder November 15, 2012 by Stan Schroeder 6

Die-hard Star Trek fans, rejoice: Although the upcoming Star Trek movie, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness,’ will not be hitting theaters until May 2013, Paramount Pictures will release the first 9 minutes of the movie in 3D IMAX theaters on December 14.

This first look into the sequel to the 2009′s ‘Star Trek’ will be available in approximately 500 IMAX cinemas accross the U.S. It will be the first time, Paramount notes, such a preview has been made available in IMAX 3D.

Several sequences in the upcoming movie were captured with IMAX cameras, and Paramount claims they will bring “unprecedented crispness and clarity” into the Star Trek experience.

Just like the 2009 movie, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ is directed by J.J. Abrams. It’s written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, and brings back Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, among others.

Well, it turns out that Star Trek into Darkness was merely the working title.
They just finalized the official title in the past week.

It's going to be called:
The Trouble with Twinkies

Can't swing the screener - Drunk Monk - 05-07-2013

They bumped up the release date to next Thursday, going for that opening weekend box. Cho, Pegg and SPOILER the actress playing Dr. Carol Marcus END SPOILER are in town next week for a big SF junket. I put in a request to interview Cho but was rejected. Cry I was figuring on writing something about Sulu being a fencer and the Kirk-Fu meme to make the KFM tie. It was a reach, for sure, but if I could have got an interview, well, I just wanted to talk to Harold, ya know? Anyway, I can't quite justify doing the screener, especially as I have a ton of other work. I'll just have to pay admission like with Iron Man 3. I totally had a story set up for that one ready to go, what with the whole different Chinese version and all, but they didn't offer any screeners. Didn't need 'em. Mad

Then there was the movie - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-18-2013

What the hell.

It looked great even we didn't see it in 3-D. It's a conversion rather than a filmed in so no big loss. The characters seem to be really well developed. There were a lot of great interactions that echoed nicely the original series. It's just that it got to a point in the story and you had to say, 'What the hell' and start scratching your noggin at the paucity of originality in the story. You started to mourn for Cumberbatch and his role because it could have been so much more, instead of the one note performance it ended up being.

This film would have been much better if another film hadn't come before it and done this story better. So, it suffers in comparison. Although in it's defense, they didn't mention the Kobiyashi Maru at all and here I though Star Trek movie makers were contractually obligated to bring it up. See, if you can change that, you can change so many things. And they didn't.

And just remember, the best way to fix advanced engine systems is by kicking it.

Kudos for filming in the Large Hadron Collider, though.

In the end, I enjoyed the film, I just wish it were more original instead of more rehashing of the past.

hold the communicator... - Drunk Monk - 05-19-2013

By 'original' do you mean the last ST movie by JJ or the original TV series?

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-19-2013

I think you are going to have to see the movie to parse that particular statement.

you're not helping now... - Drunk Monk - 05-20-2013

Should I raise or lower my expectations?

How about . . . - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-20-2013

The film is fine. There are a lot of fun bits. Just towards the end you are going to pound your head on the chair in front of you and say 'Seriously'?

And by Original, I mean let us find new stories to tell rather than taking old storylines and ideas and beating them to death. I'm looking at you Kobiyashi Maru.

Seriously? - Drunk Monk - 05-20-2013

You should go into politrix, bro. I was really tempted to see this over the weekend, but got distracted with the Cruz. And now, with the summer rush upon us (and TCEC) who knows when I'll get out to it?

fair enuf - Drunk Monk - 05-20-2013

although you could say whether it met/exceeded your expectations, or you were disappointed, without dropping spoilers.

Um, was there a swordfight? Because that's what sold me on the last one...

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-20-2013

I'm going to say it did not exceed my expectations because I really liked the first one and pretty much everyone from that one is back for this one. Like I said hitting my head on the chair in front of me in disbelief.

But it had some good funny bits, none of which were sword fights.
