Liar's Autobiography - Drunk Monk - 10-08-2012 I think I read this back in high school. A must-see for Pythonites - Drunk Monk - 02-06-2013 I'm sure most of us are familiar with the story, but it is amusing to hear it again, from Chapman's perspective. Graham was a genius, an alcoholic and a metrosexual. The film is retold from readings Gra did a few years before his death, reminiscent of Stepping Razor: Red X, but instead of Peter Tosh's meandering audio diary, this is based on Gra's book. The python crew steps up, lending their voice talents to many of the characters. Ironically, Gra's voice is used for the creation of the name Monty Python, as he does some spot on impersonations of the others (best scene in the book IMO). The film moves from different animators and styles, stop motion, South Park like flash animation, CGI and other styles. One scene has an almost Gilliam feel - there could have been more of that. There's a great hallucinatory DT scene (best scene in the film IMO); you know how I like hallucinations - as much as sword fights and Bollywood numbers. There's a lot of in-jokes to, in that you really need to know Python as the various skits mentioned serve as touch points in Gra's life. All in all, it drags here and there, but generally satisfying. A must-see if you've seen Liar's Autobiography - Drunk Monk - 02-07-2013 Anatomy of a Liar is a 45+ min 'making of' film. It's interesting in juxtaposition with Liar's Autobiography (the film) as it interviews the pythons, Gra's sig ) and blood brother, and a few other assorted people who knew him. It also gets behind the scenes of the animation which is tremendous, but sort of washed over me as there's so much of it. The DT scene which I really liked was done with oil paints on glass, giving it this pitch perfect pulsing feel. I usually disdain 'making of' info as it tends to be so self-absorbed, and barring a few exceptions, unless the product itself is absolutely mind-blowing, I really don't care how it was made. If it's a lame film, it's learning how shit is made by watching a doc on the digestive system. Actually, that might be more interesting than many 'making of' features. But this one is good, especially for python fans. Chapman was my least favorite python, but seeing all of this biographical material makes me realize how much I misjudged him. |
