Brokeback Mountain - cranefly - 12-29-2005

Lady Cranefly wanted to see a Western. I don't know why. I used to like Westerns, but burned out on them long ago from too much Gunsmoke, Rifleman, Paladin, etc., while growing up. Anyway, we went to this Western.
I wasn't expecting much, and at first it seemed all sheep-herding and rodeo. But then the two guys got married to respective wives and started raising families, and that's where it turned interesting -- dealing with the problems that every marriage must endure. There's always the specter of the extra-marital fling just waiting to, uh, specterate, and these two guys were no exception.
It's slow-moving, and I'm never certain I ever bought the attraction these two dudes developed for each other. And yes, they were brawling in the clinches, tongues a-working. But I never saw the buildup of a closer-than-close friendship. It seemed a case of two guys in the same place at the same time, both unwilling to fuck the sheep or the elk or maybe a chicken or two, so their libidos built up and they ended up hammering each other. A matter of convenience, with no real involvement. Only somehow they were desperate for each other ever afterwards.
Lots of movies have this flaw. A guy and gal fall in love at first sight, and I never buy it. Because it takes some weird mental chemistry. Something called conversation. Or at least some decent sign language. So I shouldn't be overly critical of the same absence in this movie. But for a movie like this, it stands out more -- due to the subject matter.
Lady Cranefly pretty much agrees with this assessment, by the way.
I'll give it a cautious recommendation.
Much to my chagrin (because I consider the subject matter too serious for humor), the David Letterman website's contest last week was for the Top Ten Rejected Titles for Brokeback Mountain. If you really want to subject yourself to such tasteless fare, you can go to:

Or, for convenience (and with much hesitation), I'm pasting it here:

This is a clear example... - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 01-02-2006

of what happens when chicks write westerns. I really liked the "Boondocks" send-up.

Ang and the Golden Globes - Drunk Monk - 01-17-2006

I've always thought Ang Lee was best at directing women. Crouching Tiger was about the women. Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austin - women. Eat Drink Man Woman should have been Eat Drink Woman Woman. The problem with the Hulk? Obviously he should have done the She-Hulk. That would have rocked. So in Brokeback Mountain, he directs men to be women. If he had just done it with cowgirls instead of cowboys, I would have run out to see it. Just mention that to any guy, and I'm sure he'll agree.

BTW, I really enjoyed Lee's first film, Pushing Hands. It was about this old Tai Chi master dude and his relationship with his western daugther-in-law. It's a small film, but it cast martial arts in a totally different light...

Ang still has it - Drunk Monk - 12-14-2007

I was going to succumb to the obvious puns, but truth be told, this is a beautiful film. It's a love story, sort of a Romeo and Romeo. If I was a gay guy, it would be the greatest movie ever. A lot of lingering imagery, some interesting commentary, and some intense performances. Mostly I watched it to see where Ang was, and to see Anne Hathaway, who totally rocked her role. I confess, I had to fast forward over all the guy kissing/cuddling/backdoor action. After working with PPFY on Folsom, I've seen enough of that, thank you very much. If this movie had been about two gay cowgirls, it would have been the best movie ever.

Is it wrong to be excited for this?  I feel kinda dirty, but...

Quote:Lesbian Brokeback Mountain Remake Starring Margot Robbie And Emma Watson Confirmed For 2017

12 years after the celebrated gay love story took the world by storm, a lesbian remake plans to do it all again.
At a press conference in Los Angeles this morning, production company River Road Entertainment, the makers of Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledgers’ huge cult classic “Brokeback Mountain”, announced that a remake of the film will hit the screens in 2017. The film will follow two lesbian lovers in rural USA and will retain most of the themes of the original film, aside from the obvious gender switch. Mega-stars Margot Robbie and Emma Watson have been cast to play the two lesbians struggling to compromise their secret lesbian relationship with their intolerant surroundings. The two actors were present at the press conference and were both beaming with excitement at infusing their on touch on the threefold Oscar winner flick. Emma Watson had this to say:
I am honoured and blessed to get the opportunity to play a character very different from myself. I think taking on personas with completely different experiences than yourself is what acting is at its core. From what I’ve seen, the script and the other people involved with this, I think we’re going to make a marvellous film.
Margot Robbie was equally exhilarated
As an Australian actor, this obviously means a lot to me. I hope to do the Heath Ledgers’ role justice.
When asked what they were expecting from some of the more raunchy girl-on-girl scenes that are inevitable, they didn’t seem to have any qualms.
Us both being straight won’t be a problem, we’re actors, it’s just something we have to do“.
The movie is slated to be released in June 2017 and the first trailer will drop on Boxing Day.
