Absolutely spectacular art. Very abstract story - not even sure there is one. Ridiculous eye candy tho... https://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?36084-SHAOLIN-COWBOY-(the-comic) One of the back covers was clearly derived from the KFTC cover we ran for the Abbot. Can't find it just now but here's the KFTC cover... ![]() RE: It's my martial arts world - King Bob - 02-25-2022 A martial art I'd never heard of: Angampora, from Sri Lanka. The article is mostly about the photographer, but check out the deer antler weapon. RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2022 I'm getting a 404 error on your link above KB. Angampora is rare. Only seen video but never live demos. Check this out - https://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?63815-Sri-Lankan-Angampora RE: It's my martial arts world - King Bob - 02-25-2022 Trying again: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/angampora-sri-lanka-martial-art Updated the above link as well. I witnessed an old folk style at the Shaolin Festival where some dude used these little antlers with ribbons on it. There's a common Kung Fu weapon known as Deer Antler Knives and I postulated a connection. RE: It's my martial arts world - King Bob - 02-25-2022 My favorite part of the video is the descriptions. It's like an incomprehensible poem. RE: It's my martial arts world - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 02-25-2022 (02-25-2022, 02:15 PM)King Bob Wrote: My favorite part of the video is the descriptions. It's like an incomprehensible poem. Agreed. I would have to see them in use against another human. I spotted a couple of moves that looked like trapping an opponent's blade, but 97% was graceful spinning with no discernible purpose. Beautiful movement/flow. RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2022 You mean the names of the movements? Those are called quanpu - literally ‘fist poems’. Remember that Chinese is a highly idiomatic language so it’s akin to the metaphor that Star Trek TNG was aiming for with ‘Shaka when the walls fell’. I’ve done a lot of translating of those - sometimes they are quite revealing. They are also very subjective and never x=x. I’ve done comparisons with other schools on lyrical sets and it’s a lot like how songs diverge lyrically between versions. RE: It's my martial arts world - Greg - 02-27-2022 I know. Politics, but... Quote:World judo body suspends Putin as its honorary president RE: It's my martial arts world - King Bob - 02-27-2022 Back to DM - I assume the names are keys to remembering the moves in the set. Is that standard for all styles? And agreed that there's a lot of just spinning around in that set. RE: It's my martial arts world - King Bob - 03-01-2022 DM - those move names are the key to your memoir. Just name each chapter after one, and then write about whatever you can connect to it, martial arts or not. |
