Slightly off the main topic, but following the previous posts, a good article on cultural appropriation

RE: It's my martial arts world - El Dingo - 07-10-2018

Cultural Appropriation is awesome. Loving alternate cultures and attempting to emulate them is awesome. We should start by appropriating foreign holidays and making them national non-working holidays, starting with Chinese and Japanese "Children's Day", "Grandparent's Day", "Grave-Sweeping Day" etc.

Then we need to have more men wear kilts, bring back the Chinese queue, more women in Saris and Kimonos.

I believe cultural tolerance and eventual blending leads to world peace.

Not those stupid cowboy boots with the long toes. That shit is entering Ugg territory.

But seriously folks, if someone wearing your ancestors clothing offends you, you have serious priority issues. All cultures die eventually (if you don't believe me, try reading American documents from 1776).

If you still don't believe me, champion foot-binding and female genital-mutilation claiming cultural righteousness.

See you in the Star Trek universe!

I‘m with El Dingo on this one. “All culture is synthesis“ (John Shirley). Seriously, no culture was ever created in a vaccuum. The real question is someone being an asshole about it. I like seeing American culture getting worked over, folded up, spun around, and then kicked back to the USA. Music is king, along with food. Rap coming out of Europe, jazz out of Japan, all good. I ordered the Hamburger l’Americain” when I was in Paris years ago just to see what they thought it was. It was a cooked patty sitting on french fries, with a fried egg on top of the patty. Served by a surly middle-aged waiter.

Voila!

King Bob: Good article.

RE: It's my martial arts world - Greg - 07-11-2018

How did you find a surly waiter in Paris?

RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 07-11-2018

Actually cultural appropriation didn't come up at all at my Oakland Museum talk.

Our parent company sells all sorts of Asian style attire.  Appropriate away.  In fact, I think most of you would look good in it.  Particularly PPFY.  Chinese garb is much more flattering than knickers.

When we visited Paris everyone was an asshole. Reminded me of New York. I hear France outside of Paris is very nice.

RE: It's my martial arts world - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-11-2018

France outside Paris *is* very nice. I agree with your New York analogy.

RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 07-11-2018

I can hardly wait.  Paris is less than a month away for us.

Hundred years ago in Sengoku period, Ninjas existed in Japan.
In the battlefield, they sneaked behind enemies’ line to collect confidential information.
They excelled in disguise and psychology, and were familiar with the use of fencing, fire and sorcery.

Time flies, and it seems like Ninjas have faded away with the history.
However, have you heard the whispers of a secret Ninja squad that still exists in Fushimi Inari area?

Well, if we can win Free the Fool, I'm sure this will be a cakewalk.

Seoul-based opticals label Gentle Monster has opened its first European flagship in London

INFORMATION
For more information, visit the Gentle Monster website
ADDRESS
28-29 Argyll Street, London W1F 7EB

Every three minutes on the ground floor of a boutique on Argyll Street in Central London, a large gong sounds. The sound of its tremors reverberate around the space, causing the arms of mop-haired and pinecone-like warrior aliens to jolt into life. Extraterrestrial invasion? Science-fiction fantasy? Or the latest larger-than-human-life retail concept of Seoul-based opticals label Gentle Monster.
‘We were thinking about tiny alien beings obsessed with kung fu,’ explains the brand’s managing director Gary Bott, of the London store’s retail concept. Gentle Monster is renowned for its innovative and imaginative approach to store design. Cue a harvest-inspired outpost in Downtown LA, complete with a gentle undulating rice field, a folklore-focused boutique in Guangzhou, China or a Singapore space inspired by the philosophy of Nietzsche.

For its two-floor martial arts extravaganza in London, Gentle Monster imagined a ground floor space populated by warrior aliens, their armoured bodies constructed from undulating fronds of raffia, weaved panels of fabric and mirrored metal. Downstairs on the lower ground floor sit rows of tiny armed aliens, their limbs too limited for battle, and their minds controlling the extraterrestrial troops upstairs.
For each space, Gentle Monster create a unique multisensory environment, complete with a fragrance and soundscape. Amongst the rows of the label’s signature flat and two-tone styles – manufactured in the brand’s Korean and Chinese factories – customers are also greeted by a battlefield surrounded by shrub-like forms, rows of cheering aliens clutching glittering pom poms, and even an alien hall of fame of the planet’s most fearsome fighters. Kapow! §

...wow. I hope they go broke and then catch fire and die screaming.

RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 07-31-2018

I still can't grok this.

But I think it might work for the design of Victory SF.

RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 08-03-2018

Speaking of ideas for Victory SF....

Note - this is 8:21 you'll never get back.  Strongly suggest that you stop before the 1 min mark and just skip to the end around 6:45 or so.  Also suggest you mute the sound and put on some bagpipe music.

Will Victory SF sell kilts?  Asking for a friend.
