LCF went for an eye exam today, and afterwards went to work (Stanford).  I just got this email from her.
Quote:I'm at work right now and we have a possible case -- someone in our building (but who just got back from a trip, so the building should be okay).  There's a lab where they're building a giant camera for a telescope and purifying liquid xenon for a dark matter experiment and he when there after he came back, so that lab is shut down and getting deep-cleaned.

Gah!

RE: COVID-19 - King Bob - 03-13-2020

My mother has pneumonia symptoms again and is back at Stanford Hospital. Last night the doctor told me they need to test her for the virus and made it sound like she's in an underground isolation unit.

My brother told me that they were sent home because someone at Ames had the virus. So he could have given it to her.

RE: COVID-19 - Greg - 03-13-2020

Oy, vey. I'm hoping for the best.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 03-13-2020

Yikes.  Sorry to hear this, KB.  Hoping for the best.

RE: COVID-19 - King Bob - 03-13-2020

Well she doesn't have the virus. (Stanford is doing their own testing; I imagine they have been planning for this.) She does have pneumonia (3rd time since November) and a UTI. But they are probably going to release her tomorrow or Sunday. Just another stop for the slow train of decline.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 03-13-2020

Well good news that it wasn't covid-19.

My Friday the 13th went poorly.  This morning Jonny brought everyone in individually to alert us all to the possiblity that there might be rolling leave without pay if things don't turn around.  It's not iminent but a possibility we should all be prepared to face.  And Well Within closed for a month, maybe more. So Stacy just got laid off.

RE: COVID-19 - The Queen - 03-13-2020

My April/May trip was just cancelled. Lots of court reporters freaking out because numerous courts are shutting down and depositions are being cancelled left and right. I wrote a blog post to our customers posting suggestions on how to work remotely, and how to use any down time constructively.

We’ll see tomorrow morning if the neighbors have already bought out all the essentials or if we can refill our pantry and fridge. I posted a message on our two neighborhood boards (FB group and Next Door) volunteering to pick up groceries or supplies for any of our immuno-compromised or elderly neighbors who can’t risk being in a crowded store. No takers yet, but a few thank you’s for the offer.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 03-14-2020

A lawyer Kung Fu brother was postulating on how this all affects constitutional rights like freedom to assemble.  He also pointed out the time limit on arraignment if courts shut down.  But I won't see him for two weeks because our Academy just shut down too.  I guess I need to practice on my lonesome today.

Or just binge movies and surf the net.

We got enough toilet paper to get through this for now.

Or take a nap.

Facebook is fascinating now in a morbid way, watching the reactions, the news, the flailing attempts at humor. Stacy went to Whole Foods while I was asleep and said there were mobs and empty shelves.  She only picked up a few things on her list and bailed. We were ahead of the curve stocking up last week.  Or was it two weeks ago? It's such a blur now.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 03-16-2020

We are shutting down.  My office is now scrambling to set everything up so we can do things via telecommuting, however without income, we won't be able to afford printing the next issue.  Our TN office will be taking over order fulfillment.

Stay safe DOOM

Six Bay Area counties are expected to demand residents shelter in place for the next three weeks as health officials scramble to keep coronavirus from spreading across the region.

Here’s a quick look at what you need to know about the shelter-in-place order:

Why is this happening?

To safeguard public health and safety. Coronavirus is easily transmitted between people, especially in group settings. The shelter-in-place orders are being enacted to slow the spread of the virus by mandating that people stay indoors and isolate themselves — except to attend to certain essential activities, according to the health orders. As the number of cases in the region continues to swell, health officials are also deeply concerned about being able to handle a huge influx of new patients at clinics and hospitals.

Which counties are affected?

San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties. The City of Berkeley, which has its own health department, is also participating. Three other Bay Area counties — Sonoma, Solano and Napa — were not immediately included.

How many people are affected?

Those counties have a combined population of 6.7 million.

How long is the order in place for?

The shelter-in-place order becomes effective at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and will be in place until at least April 7. People, particularly vulnerable populations, are advised to leave their homes only to take care of essential errands.

What will be closed, and what will stay open?

Counties are shutting down all but the most critical operations, according to the health orders. Places that attract clusters of people, like gyms, nightclubs or bars, will have to close down. Restaurants must serve only take-out or delivery orders. Hospitals, grocery stores, banks and pharmacies will remain open.

The order calls for all “routine medical appointments” and elective procedures to be canceled or rescheduled.

Daycare centers and veterinarians will remain open with some restrictions, as will laundry services. Emergency services, like police and fire operations, will also continue.

All non-essential gatherings of any size are now banned.

Can I still go outside for essentials, exercise and fresh air?

Yes. People will still be able to leave their homes to handle essential business in limited circumstances — like buying groceries or picking up medicine — and to get fresh air. But when people do need to leave their homes, health officials are requiring they maintain at least six feet from other individuals and that they wash their hands for at least 20 seconds as often as possible. They’re also calling on people to cover their coughs and sneezes and to avoid shaking hands.

How are the counties enforcing the shelter-in-place-order?

That’s not yet clear. The shelter-in-place order is not a mandatory lockdown for residents, which would forbid people from leaving their homes without explicit permission. But the health orders issued by the counties calls for the sheriff or chief of police to “ensure compliance” in order to safeguard public health.

What’s the impact on public transportation?

Airports, taxis, and public transit — including BART — will remain operational, but only for essential travel and people are expected to keep six feet apart when possible.

Non-essential travel “on foot, bicycle, scooter, automobile or public transit” is prohibited.

People may travel for shopping for necessary supplies, accessing health care, and providing aid to family and friends who need assistance, and for non-residents, returning to their home outside the Bay Area, according to the health orders.

OY, vey. What does it mean you won't get paid?

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 03-16-2020

Maybe not. I got Jonny EDD info to distribute to everyone here.

RE: COVID-19 - Greg - 03-16-2020

Excellent. I hear they have waived the one week waiting period before you can get benefits.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 03-16-2020

On of my ninjas tells me that Santa Cruz will order a shelter in place imminently.

We’ll see about those payouts. They’re gonna he swamped.

Cruz just ordered the shelter in place until Apr 7.
