  Cop Out
Posted by: The Queen - 02-27-2010, 06:38 PM - Forum: Doom Movies - Replies (1)

Silly. Funny, but this is most definitely a junk food kind of movie. Sure you enjoy it while you're watching it, but it feels like eating too many donuts at one sitting. I think I would have preferred seeing this one via DVR, so that I could easily rewind and replay; I missed a lot of lines because Tracy Morgan has some enunciation issues. And while I do dearly love Kevin Smith, his preoccupation with what he refers to as ATM (loomed large in Clerks II and in far too many of his tweets about his wife) is really getting old and tired.

  The Crazies

Lance wanted to take the train into town, so we did. Yes, you read that right. Yes, I am still in Los Angeles.

We took it to the Arclight theater which continues to charge a disproportionate amount for movies. Unfortunately, it was the only theater we could take a train to visit.

The movie was fine. It had some scares. It had some good paranoia. All told, I felt like I've seen this type of movie before. Although, I don't remember seeing the original. Although there was a film back in the eighties just like it with a lot more sex and a lot less violence. I'm thinking it was called impulse.

The crazies was fine. But nothing to get all excited about.

  Cirque du Soleil OVO
Posted by: Drunk Monk - 02-26-2010, 01:18 PM - Forum: Doom Media - Replies (1)

The bug theme was silly. Cirque has grown so formulaic in its overall composition - working the audience before the show, the goofy 'art' clown MCs, the big trapeze act just prior to the intermission. You never get to see what's in the OVO egg, and that was really disappointing.

Nevertheless, Cirque continues to get the most awesome circus acts on the planet, so forget the damn bugs, just get on with the show. Act 1 was dominated by two traditional Chinese acts: a jar juggling quintet that painted their jars to look like kiwi and corn cob sections (they juggle these with their feet, lying on their backs) and a diabolo player that was just astounding. I've seen a lot of diabolo but this guy has major skillz. I've never seen anyone do some of the flying handle stuff nor work three diabolos at once. Simply awesome. There were some contortionists and some trapeze, which were good but not astounding. Act 2 had more contortionists and some odd acrobats. The standout acts were a slackrope walker that simply defied the laws of gravity and a trampoline finale that used three tramps in front of a rock climbing wall and a long tumbletrack. The live show Shaolin in the Wind was the first (and only other) time when I saw the tramps in front of the wall schtick. Cirque took that to a whole new level.

Ultimately, I walked away entertained, but it was the weakest Cirque concept so far.

  Asterix et Obelix-Mission Cleopatre (2002)
Posted by: thatguy - 02-21-2010, 11:00 PM - Forum: Doom DVDs - Replies (3)

A live-action version of the comic, on par with the Hollywood live-action Flinstones. I watched it in French w/subtitles. Lots of site gags and popculture refrences. I read on IMDB that when this was made it was the most expensive movie of all time. Not sure why. Perhaps it was Gerard Derpardieu as Obelix, on Snoop Dogg singing Mission Cleopatre over the end credits...

  Fantasy Mission Force (1982)

Jackie Chan has top billing, but I thought he was a tertiary character until much later in the movie. This is a take off on the Dirty Dozen. The plot goes something like this: tha japanese have captured the four top generals of the world. One man is tasked with recruiting the top criminal talent to rescue them. There's kilt man, kaiser helmet man, and Elvis man among the cast. On their travels they are captured by the Cirque du Soleil Amazons. The are in an Abbot and Costello haunted castle. There's also a Nazi demolition derby. I watched this online. I'll post the link. The filming and editing make this look like it's from the early 70's. I'd say it's doom-worthy, but I started to fall asleep at the end.

I like Jason Bateman and Kristen Wiig, but yawn...at least I was getting some work done while it was playing.
