  "Antichrist" (2009)

IMDB Limk

This is the Netflix summary of the film:

///////////////////////////
After their child dies, a therapist (Willem Dafoe) and his wife (Charlotte Gainsbourg) flee to their cabin in the woods, where they hope to mend their emotional wounds. But the grief-stricken couple watches their troubles multiply when very strange things begin to happen.
////////////////////////////////

Sounds spooky, right? Kind of 'Don't Look Now'-ish?

I like Willem Defoe. I like Lars van Trier (at least 'Dogville' and 'Dancer in the Dark'). The description seemed innocuous enough. A nice little thriller to enjoy after a busy day at work.

Instead I had my psyche scarred and caught a severe case of 'I can never unsee that'.

Don't get me wrong. It's a stylish movie with solid acting and great cinematography. It has that slow pacing I've come to expect from von Trier, focusing more on character than action. This time however, the slow pace is the build up to batshit insane suspense and violence.

I guess the extremely explicit sex scene at the beginning of the film should have clued me in that this was not going to be Bjork singing in the train yard.

I won't spoil anything, but you all know I've seen a lot of violent films but this one has a scene that left me stunned.

After watching the movie I could not help but wonder who would produce a movie for millions of dollars, with a semi-big star and semi-famous director, guaranteed to offend everyone and have no chance at the box office?

It's a very well made film. I can't say I enjoyed it, but it will haunt me for a while.

  "Deadgirl" 2008

IMDB link

I'd read about this movie a couple years ago. Apparently it's very controversial and has sparked a lot of dialogue so I decided to check it out.

The basic premise is pretty simple. I won't spoiler this because it's revealed in the film's trailer. A couple of teenage boys find a naked zombie girl chained to a gurney in an abandoned sanitarium.

What follows is a cross between "Gummo" and "Day of the Dead". It's a character study of troubled adolescence, misogyny and raging hormones coupled with violence, gore and rape.

This is not a date movie.

There are plenty of scares to be found in the crumbling 'nuthouse' and the soundtrack uses lots of low-frequency drones and startling crashes. I noticed a lot of cinematic techniques from Asian horror films.

A very disturbing movie, not for the squeamish.

Netflix: Watch Instantly! A tale of Satanic possesion
Posted by: El Dingo - 04-01-2010, 02:44 AM - Forum: Doom DVDs - Replies (1)

Last year Netflix introduced a feature called 'Watch Instantly'. This feature allowed you to watch a relatively small selection of movies streamed to your PC on demand without having to wait for a DVD in the mail.

The strange thing about this feature is the selection of movies they have available.

Lots of documentaries, bad Sci-Fi and obscure action flicks.

Recently they offered a DVD that enables a networked Sony Playstation 3 (aka 'Rock Band' machine)to access your 'Instant Queue' and stream them to your TV.

This means I am enabled to watch a plethora of films I would probably never have normally rented. I now have a routine of coming home, pouring a scotch and viewing some strange movie that had a catchy title or interesting premise.

This will not end well.

  Jennifer's Body

It's Juno but with demons. I'm thinking Diablo Cody has a distinctive voice for her teenage characters that has nothing to do with the way real teenagers talk.

In the beginning, the movie was very enjoyable. I bought into the premise. I enjoyed looking at Ms. Fox. Kudos to the Film's authors for trying to make a horror movie with a plot, but eventually there is just too much plot and the plot consists of let's see Jennifer kill people. And there is too much of this. Plus, our heroine, who is supposed to be very smart, keeps going to visit Jennifer despite seeing her covered in blood and vomiting excreta. It takes too long for our heroine to determine that maybe there is something wrong with Jennifer.

It was an interesting premise poorly executed.

  Ichi
Posted by: Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-29-2010, 10:22 AM - Forum: Doom DVDs - Replies (5)

This is the one with the blind girl as Ichi.

I always picture Ichi as the lovable blind rogue who is a bad ass swordsman. The girl Ichi is just a down girl who hates life and is looking for the Ichi who was her father and trained her. She never smiles. Never cracks jokes. It's all very dour.

I got the feeling this was a television film in Japan. It had that movie of the week feel or maybe even a Pilot. The whole thing sort of bland and lacked contrast. And it had my favorite, crappy looking CGI blood. And all the sword fights were one cut and done. They also spent a lot of money on Fabulous hair, because all the bad guys had it. The second in command had especially awesome hair that Elvis would have killed for.

The plot was creaky and melodramatic. The hero, who wasn't Ichi, had a problem from his youth which meant he couldn't draw sword. He could beat you with sticks,he just couldn't show the naked steel. This begged the question, "Why not kick the shit out of your enemy with a stick then?" It was probably also an illusion to sexuality. Maybe that was too deep for this movie.

Everybody also had some problem with a blind guy. Ichi wanted her to find her blind father. The hero had a blind mother. The bad guy lost a duel to a blind fighter who could have been Ichi's father. There was even a blind swordsman at the town celebration who Ichi hoped was her father but wasn't. I know, another spoiler. I'm not spoiling anything because you are not going to rush out and see this.

The way the film ended also gave it that TV Pilot feel, when Ichi walks off and promises to see the young boy again some day. Blah Blah Blah.
